| Crate Question? We have trained roscoe to go Potty outside.........we took the pee pad cout of the house and when he needs to go he runs to the door and jumps at his leash. My question is about an expen or gating the kitchen off......at what age are these options a good idea......I'm afraid he is going to have an accident........he is 5 months old and we usually keep him in the crate during the day and we both come home during our lunch breaks to take him out..........How do I know he won't just see his new found freedom as a reason to potty in the house?????????? |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Honestly mine were a year old before I considered giving them free rein of the house unsupervised. Since adding Reggie...we are back to babygating the kitchen.

| You can try gating him while you are home and watch him to see what happens. If you can catch him going you then need to train him no, outside and he will learn to hold it. It takes awhile but sounds like he is doing great right now.

| Maya is gated off ..... the 1st Floor is free access ...... and you know what she just goes and lays in her crate when we leave .... she sleeps until we get back ..... There will be accidents I am sure .... but maybe you can start with one room at a time .... and reward with treats if it went well ..... mine learned a lot pretty quick ... cause she got her fav. treats ..... we started little by little when she was about 5 to 6 months old ..... Good luck ....

| My Suzi is nearly 5 months old. I guess I am different. Mostly, because i live in a 2 bedroom condo. I have used pee pads from day one, and allow Suzi to go whereever she likes. I feel like potty accidents are a part of owning a puppy .I just deal with it. Suzi is mostly trained too . Maybe I am permissive, but, I just did not want to use a crate, I enjoy suzi's company, and feel like she is a member of the family. I clean up after her, and feel like it is no big deal. Best wishes to you.
