You won't know until you try. I think an ex-pen is a good starting point, it gives them more space then a crate but they can't rip up your walls or chair legs while your away. Potty issues aside we have to remember they are puppies and will chew things when given the opportunity. My girls have been in an ex-pen since they came home, they sleep in a crate in my room at night though.
