| Yorkie likes to go fishing Well my daughter's Yorkie( Maya) came for a visit for about a week. When she comes over, we(just me and her) go down to the dock at night and fish. She absolutely loves to do this.Maya is 5 years old. I have 2 Mini Schnauzers(one year old) and they all have a big time. The Schnauzers get bored with the fishing and start getting into stuff or wandering off, so they don't go. Well tonight Maya and I went down and I caught 3 or 4 fish and I let her see them, when I get them out of the water. Then we let them go. She gets real excited when we do this and thinks we are going to catch a fish on every cast. Tonight the water was high and was about 15 inches below the dock surface. I caught a fish and it was thrashing about on the surface and jumped out of the water right in front of her. Next thing I know I hear a big splash and Maya has jumped off the dock after the fish. She can swim, and started swimming towards me as I grabbed her up out of the water. Well that ended the fishing and I had to go dry her off. Tomorrow we may go swimming and then I'll give her a bath. Its kind of scary when they do stuff like this though. One of my Schnauzers had a dead fish one day and I took it away from her and threw it in the lake. The water was way down then and about 6 feet below the dock surface when she jumped in, after the dead fish. At the time(puppy) she had never been swimming before. It was cold then and I thought I was going to have to jump in then too, but they must be born with swimming ability cause she swam back to the bank and got out. Its good to know if they can swim or not and a good idea to take them swimming so they are not too freaked out if something happens and they go in. Take your dog swimming, David Last edited by echo8287; 07-12-2008 at 08:34 PM. |

| We have two ponds - and Bailey loves the fish too!! She also likes the frogs. She'll try to sneak up on the frogs. Once a few weeks ago she fell into the pond and got right back out. We agreed it was best that she learn how to swim - so we went swimming last weekend. I can't say she liked it - but she did swim! (there was nothing graceful about it! lol)

| If you take them a few times they start getting better at swimming. At first it seems like most are flailers. One of my Mini Schnauzers was a smooth swimmer right off the bat. The Yorkie and the other Schnauzer use to be kind of flailers, but they are a lot smoother now. We take them 5 or 6 times a year in the summer, after the water warms up. The Yorkie doesn't really seem to like it, but she doesn't really like a bath either. One of the Schnauzies(the one that likes to swim more) actually likes to take a bath and I sometimes have to keep her out of the shower. David |

| Fishing may be the next thing we'll have to try with Hot Rod. He's just gotten used to being in the water and I think he even likes it. I keep telling hubby that I'll clean the fish if he catches them, maybe I ought to let Hot Rod catch them! I totally agree with you about teaching them to swim. If you are anywhere near water, it is a good idea. Hot Rod has done well with it and we've even had him in without his life jacket, just in case he should fall in without it on. He did really well with that too (to my relief).
