| Aggressive Charlie. Hello people. I have an issue with my dog. His 4 years old now. Each year my family puts in money to get the dog groomed. the first 2 times we took it to our local vet. they did a s**tty job but never asked us for extra money being the Charlie bites. But then we had to move houses. we kept the same vet, but i told my family that i would take him to another place that do professional work. they over priced me because the dog bites. they told me they would put him to sleep. My first vet never charged me to put the a dog to sleep cause he bites. Now being that where i took him was kinda far, they did a good job but they over priced me. i decided to take him to a new place near my house. Most the dogs in my area have their dogs checked there and groomed. they all look good. Now when i took him in today they told me that my dog is too aggressive. that he has a fear factor problem that is hard to solve, but to work on it. they charged me to recheck him again. then they charged me for pills to give to him a bit sleepy when i take him in next week for a groom since they couldn't do it today do to his aggression. I was abit mad because the first place never charged me to check him. they just added to the price that they had to make him go to sleep. Since the new place it's near my house anyone from my family can take him or pick him up. But still no happy with this charges to re check him. Should i stay with my old vet or the new vet? all he did was weight him and check his hear rate. and bam 50 dollars in 1 min gone. oh and the pills to make him sleepy. now i have to wait 1 week to get him groomed. Im thinking in taking him to my old place since they have his record since he was a puppy they know how to treat dogs well even if the owner is not there. Plus they have water for dogs when they come in. this guys didn't have crap. The aggression with charlie i gotta fix but how??? . HIM => http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8276/03bc0.jpg |

| I would go back to the first place. Does he only bite at the groomers and the vets? It sounds like hes scared and hes biting. If it is more than that you need to get with a behavorialist or a positive trainer

| Reduce the stress on both you and Charlie. Groom him yourself. It's really not that hard. For the amount the grooming costs and the pills you can buy a clipper and scissor's and do it yourself. I would never give my dog anything to put him to sleep or make him drouzy which is why I had to learn myself. We can help you. THere are seveal member's here who groom their own pets. Really, it's not that hard. I feel bad for both of you. Too much stress on poor Charlie. |

the pills he charged me .30cents for them. they were just a few. im thinking in giving him the pill my self and just groom him my self at my house. I already have the scissors and machine to do it. I called my old vet and they said that they didn't have an issue with him before. but they did use a muscle on him. but if they used a muscle him it means they didn't cut around his nose area and under. they also told me it would cost $100 extra to put him to sleep to do the job..ahhhh. Im giving the damn pill and doing it my self. We have people coming over and he looks like crap right now.

| They could have been rough with him when they groomed him and thats why he bites. We suspected that happened to our Chachi at his first grooming. She said he was hard to groom. He want himself for a couple of days after the groom

Please don't put him under. Some don't wake up! And for grooming it's just not worth the risk. He should be ok with you don't you think? Try giving him little snacks and I remeber one of the breeder's on YT mentioned she was a groomer at one time and used peanut butter on the top of the inside of the mouth and the dog was so busy licking she just kept cutting. Smart I think. Poor Charlie. Be nice to him.

| Okay news update. Me and my mom's ended up grooming his hair. not bad for a first times. he did tried to bite but we used the muscle. he was okey with putting it on. then he got used to us cutting him. he wasn't that mad. so we have decided not to have him groomed at the vet's anymore. Thanx everyone for their advice!. |

| I was reading some of your posts and on one you mentioned that Charlie had trouble going up the wood stairs because his nails were so long, that you hadn't cut them since last summer. My guess is that he is not used to being groomed regularly so he is afraid and therefor snappy. If you take your time gently brushing him and getting him used to touching his feet etc I think he will eventually be more trusting and allow you to groom him. You should brush him every day and his nails should be trimmed every six to eight weeks. His eyes should be kept clean and neatly trimmed. It takes time but over time he will love the attention and feeling clean and look forward to having it done. Also he should be given a bath every couple of weeks, using a gently conditioning shampoo.
