| ![]() People pick different breeds based on personality and aesthetics. I like small fluffy dogs. I like dogs that like to be pampered and follow their owner around the house. My first dog was a Shih Tzu that weighs eleven pounds. My Shih Tzu is a beautiful dog, and I love her a lot. I brought a dog carrier for my Shih Tzu, and I found out carrying an eleven pound dog hurts my shoulder. I decided to get a smaller dog next time, because I wanted a dog that I could take around town in a dog carrier. I brought a Yorkie that was projected to weigh five pounds. Even if he weighs more than projected, his weight will not stop me from loving him. I like all Yorkies. I just wanted a Yorkie within the smaller end of the standard. I agree with other Yorkie Talk Members that most Yorkies projected to weigh seven pounds end up weighing ten pounds. I just wanted to get what my heart desirers. I want a small, cute, fluffy, and spunky dog. The dog’s size, coat texture, color, and personality were important factors that helped me pick the Yorkie that I wanted to adopt. When I saw Joshua, I knew he was the dog for me. Not everybody will be attracted to the same dog. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No one should be criticized for the dog they choose to adopt. Not everything is for everybody. I glad the lady did not purchase the dog, because he was not the dog for her. I do not want the dog to bounce from home to home. Every dog deserves a good home. From reading posts on Yorkie Talk, I learned that some people prefer Yorkies that were bigger than the standard size for a Yorkie. I know that someone wants to adopt him too. |

| ![]() I do think there is an 'unhealthy' obsession with verrrry tiny dogs..smaller the better. I knew that i wanted a smaller yorkie..say 4-5lbs. My breeder warned me Pixie was going to be a little one..she said 3.5-4lbs.. she is 3lbs at 13 months old..a bit smaller than i expected..which did worry me..but she is healthy, strong and very feisty! good apetite and the picture of health so i'm not as worried now as i was. If she had turned out 8lbs i wouldn't love her any less..my last Yorkie girl was around 6lbs and i thought she was tiny! I guess people think the smaller they are, the cuter they are..and easier to carry around everywhere...which i can relate to as i wanted a tiny girl that i could carry around with me...my hubby is in the Airforce and goes away often..I wanted a little companion that could be with me practically 24/7 and i do confess i carry her around like a baby! ![]() ![]()

| ![]() When i was researching yorkies and read that 4-7 pounds was the bes t average...realizing there are many that weigh more and that weigh less and do jsut fine. I chose a lineage within that range. Kirby's parents were 4 and 7 pounds. Well he is full grown and 3.3 lbs. Happy as a lark and healthy . I hope he has many happy years. I searched for a healthy yorkie . I cannot imagine not loving him at any size. And it is a bonus not expected to be able to take him so many places because of his size. I dont think I would ever try for such a small one though. I worry ..he is so small.

| ![]() I guess we can call it yorkie ignorance ![]() Size doesn't matter, to me they are all loving and adorable! Unless there's a medical reason I don't want to hear people say "I want the smallest one" It worries me that over time as these extra small yorkies are bred, it will only result in heartache for the people who get them as pets! Afterall yorkies are suppose to make you smile and you shouldn't have to stress about taking them to the hospital because of this and because of that...

In defence of the smaller yorkie, mine is 4lbs and the sire of her puppy is smaller than she is. The sire and the sire's sire are and have always been healthy though both are very small. My baby is healthy too her only health problem is she needs to have her teeth cleaned soon ![]() I think the problem comes when breeders ( I know a few like this) breed only for size and could care less what health problems they may have at birth or 5 years later. I wish I new how and why 7 lbs has suddenly become a " bigger" dog. | |

| ![]() What made me a mad, was that Marco was to big yet she was looking for a playmate for her 19lb dog...How can a 7lb or larger dog be to big for her 19lb dog..I have no idea how big any of my puppies will be. I do not want to try and tell anyone even a guess but I kinda felt pressured into it... Marco weighs 2lbs at 7wks old so I was only going by the chart... He is also all belly because he eats ALOT... I have an approved home for Polo and possibly Addie and have told them both that I can give them a more accurate guess when the pups are about 10 wks... They are not leaving here until 12 wks so if they hit a sudden growth spurt and the new owners are not happy, then I will refund their deposit as I do not want them to be unhappy with one of my babies and rehome them later.. As far as the tiny pup thing, I can understand 4-6lbs but people wanting 2-3lb dogs on purpose just seem like they want attention. I understand if your dog just doesn't get bigger, but to email and say how big will they be, I am looking for one under 3lbs. that is just crazy.. And maybe I would want one to carry everywhere with me if I didn't already have 3 skin children attached to my hip!! ![]() |

Rule of thumb...triple the weights at 8 weeks...and doubling it at 12 is usually a more accurate guess.

| ![]() I have 2 yorkies. When I was at the vets office on monday there was a lady there with her Yorkie. She looked at my bigger one and said oh how old is he? I said they are both 5months old. She said too bad mine was half his size when he was 5 months. I told her that i like him just fine the way he is and that the size doesnt matter to me. His brother is a little smaller probably by a pound or so but i dont care. Some people are silly and should keep their comments to themselves. Then someone else in the waiting room said i doubt they are brothers they dont look anything alike .. duh ![]() |

| ![]() That woman who wanted a playmate for her 19lb dog is an idiot. My Suzi is 4 months old and about 5lbs . She is what I consider a bigger Yorkie, and I love her so much! Suzi is healthy, and happy. That is all that matters to me! ![]() ![]()

| ![]() I hear you!!! I feel blessed because I got Keoki at 6 months because people thought he was going to be too big and didn't want him- he is almost a year and 6 pounds!!! Definitely their loss!!! He seems small to me but I had a lady the other day say her yorkie would never get "that big" - her baby was 2 pounds?? I don't know- They come in all wonderful shapes and sizes- The right person will love him just the way he is and they are out there like I was for sweet Keoki |

| ![]() I definetly don't like to hear about YT members getting "belittled" or picked-on by ignorant people because their dog is not "2lbs." Sometimes these stories are just unbelievable. Its just disrespectful!! I do get a sense that with some uneducated yorkie owners, its like whoever has the smallest dog "wins." Wins what I dont know. I hear so many stories of people being approached by a stranger and that stranger saying OH your dog is SO BIG mine is only 2lbs. Its like yeah, whatever big deal!! thanks for sharing!!! Its like they want a cookie and a pat on the back or something ![]() |
