Thanks to everyone for their input. I didn't realize that it was such a debatable question. I guess I feel like there is a comfort zone with a breeder that registers with AKC. What I mean by that is that AKC has been around for a long time and if a breeder takes the effort to follow the guidelines, then the chances are that they puppies are healthy and such. Not to say that there are aren't any exceptions to this. I understand that it is up to me to investigate the breeder as best that I can but I just feel that AKC registering is a good start.

since I would not be breeding or showing, registering really does not mean anything to me other than that comfort zone of a healthy and good temperment dog.

Just the fact that the are AKC doesn't mean much, AKC, is still ridding itself of bad breeders, and I'm hoping with DNA evidence, and the fact that states are making stricter laws regarding puppy mills, the AKC will rid itself of more bad breeders. Remember, anyone who buys two AKC dogs with breeding rights can breed these dogs, and become an AKC breeder, so this is just the first step. I like to recommend those breeders who are members of the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (YTCA), if you really want a safety net. Even then I would be cautious.
