ACA Registration
 

I tried searching for a post on ACA registration but could not find anything. Is this similar to an APRI type of registration or more like a AKC?

Yes, it's one of the alternative registries. When the AKC cracked down on breeders, many had to leave and these alternative registries popped up. Many register mixed breeds as well. There used mainly by breeders who want to mislead the public. Anyone can start a registry.

Are you talking about little Hot Rod? Let me just be clear on this, I don't support the AKC because I think the puppies are better, I support them because I believe the breeders to be better. I only will support those breeders who are following a very high breeding standard. But I don't consider one puppy better than another. Your little Hot Rod is adorable.

well I dont know much about any registery but Max was bought at a petshop and while he is the most loving and adorable baby...his papers are ACA. I dont think max came from a responsible breeder :(

AKC is by far the most reputable registry. I'm not familiar with the specifics of ACA, but as with ANY registry you can have good or bad breeders--even AKC is not immune to that and does not automatically make the breeder a more ethical, breed dedicated one, nor the dog of a better quality. :)

Thank you. Unfortunately Hot Rod was purchased from a pet store before we knew better. He has APRI papers but it was not important for us to register. We are very fortunate that he is healthy and a great little guy. My reason for asking about registeries is because I am researching and starting my search for a little sister for Hot Rod and after learning so much on YT, I want to make a good choice. I was given a name of a breeder to contact and she lists that she has both AKC and ACA registery. I totally agree with you about breeders who follow a high breeding standard and that is why I am researching.

Personally I would be skeptical of anyone with duel registries. This could mean that one of the parents are registered with one registry, and one with another. The problem is that some people buy AKC puppies with limited registration, meaning no breeding rights. They go ahead and breed them anyway, and register them with one of the alternative registries. This is legal, but it's not ethical, and since the alternative registries have no problem with this, I choose not to support them.

ACA is the American Canine Association, another one of the "alternative" registries that were formed when the AKC got stricter and started requiring DNA testing. A lot of breeders can't qualify for the AKC anymore or were suspended.

These alternative registries are often referred to as "paper" registries as that's all you get, a piece of paper. Most take your word for the fact your dogs are purebred and only require two photographs and a statement from a witness. This witness doesn't have to be a vet or any sort of dog expert either, it could be your Uncle Louie for all they care. :(

AKC is a minimum requirement IMO, but you still must research a breeder very carefully.

Just so you know APRI is a reputable registry. They are the best out of all the alternative registries (as it is put) and right up there with AKC. They require at least a 3 generation pedigree to register a dog and many many of their dogs are traced back to AKC. A lot of the other registries will register a dog with a picture or on a lessor registry's papers. Don't confuse APRI with APR or any of the others out there cause APRI is a good registry as is AKC.

I disagree with this; all the other registries say that they are not like the other "alternative" registries. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America (YTCA) is the parent club of the AKC, not any other registries. YTCA sets the standard for the Yorkshire terrier. The AKC is the only registry that does routine unscheduled inspections. The AKC is the only registry that has a list of suspended breeders. While not all AKC breeders are good, at least the AKC is making an attempt to rid themselves of the bad ones.

RID themselves of the BAD ones??? I think not! They are begging them to come back. AKC is money hungry and they have been starving for years.

In general, this is a subject that there are a wide variety of opinions on. NO existing registy has the ability to ensure that EVERY SINGLE breeder using their services runs their breeding program in an ethical manner--AKC is not immune to this. They are not the only registry that conducts inspections of facilities--HOWEVER, IMO their stringency in carrying them out makes their procedure in the area the best by comparison. And most (I can't say all) alternative registries keep records of complaints against breeders, which are not indicative by even AKC's 'suspension list', as well as records of those who have lost their right to breed under the organization.--it's really as simple as contacting them and inquiring, which everyone should do anyway. In addition, the breed standard set by YTCA is the same one responsible breeders strive for regardless to what registry they choose to use and their standpoint on many issues is valued and adapted into many programs--again, not just limited to AKC.

I'm not arguing that AKC is the premier regsitry--they set an example that other registries try to mirror. However, determining the quality of dogs and the morals of a breeder goes far beyond what registry they use. In the end, it's up to everyone as an individual to take the information, opinions and experiences shared on all sides and determine for themselves which path they want to take and which decision best suits their needs.

In short, labeling every breeder that breeds under another registry as "bad" and their dogs are "lesser" would be as nonsensical as labeling every AKC breeder as "ethical" with "perfect" quality dogs. It's just not the case.
