Really sad new today.
 

I have some really horrible news to tell if I can manage to type this. Yesterday my yorkie, Coco was out in the yard with us. My 16 year old daughter went next door to my mother in laws yard to pick blue berries and Coco followed her. Coco loved Shelby so much, she followed her everywhere. Shelby got distracted for a split second by a birds nest in the tree and Coco wandered over into our other neighbors yard. She had barely crossed the property line when their son's pitbull ran over and attacked her. We didn't even know he was their with the dog. We got Coco and rushed her to our local vet who stablilized her broken leg and sent us to the nearest emergency clinic, which for us is 1 and 1/2 hours away in Mandeville LA. Coco was rushed into surgery for broken ribs, and a punctured lung. She died there on the surgery table. Our family is devastated. We lost a little dog that was like a child to us. My daughter is heart broken and blames herself, even though I keep trying to reassure her that it wasn't. It breaks my heart to see my children hurt the way they do over this loss. To be honest with you I just wanted to die myself last night, rather than have to come home and tell my children that Coco was gone. I tried so hard to protect both of my dogs and the one minute I'm not on "alert" I lost her. I just can't explain the sorrow and regrets that I feel at this moment.

I'm crying typing this, so I'm not going to keep going. I just want to tell all of you to hug your babies a little closer today. Love them like tommorrow might not come and just be as careful as you can with these fragile little darlings.

Your poor daughter shouldn't blame herself. There wa nothing she could have done to prevent this vicious attack. I hate pitbulls. I hear too many tragic stories like yours. :big_hug:

I'm so sorry for your loss make sure you daughter knows it was not her fault and you trust her no matter what.

When I was young I left our gate open at our house an our 4 month old prize bull dog got out and got run over by a car. My mom made sure I understood closing the gate was important but it wasn't my fault the dog was killed. I felt guilty but my mom trusted me with the next puppy she got so I felt better.
It helped me to learn to be careful but also that thing beyond our control happen and we cannot blame ourselves.

I feel so bad for your daughter and hope you realize it really is no ones fault and you should have no regrets for allowing your fur baby to be with your daughter.

You and your family will be in my prayers. What an awful thing to have happen to such a little angel.:(

I'm so sorry to hear of this. You must be devastated not only by the loss of Coco but having to console your daughter. She and Coco had probably gone over there many times with no problem. This is a tragedy but it isn't her fault. I hope in time she'll come to realize this. awwe I'm sorry for your loss.. you know in ohio they are trying to outlaw the ownership of pitbull breeds altogether. A new Yorkie might actually help the situation though.

I feel so bad for you, I hope you can help your daughter deal with this. This must be agonizing for you. Praying for you and your family.

I swear I think yorkies are a magnet for other dogs. They seem to look like little moving toys or something.

I was walking zoey and another yorkie tried to attack her.

I'm soooooo sorry :( I think I know how you feel and I understand the regrets. We lost our little Peanut in January and just this past Saturday, I was brought to tears thinking about him.

Just try to think or your baby at the Rainbow Bridge, playing and running free.

Please reassusre your daughter its not her fault!! I know it will take some time for everyone to get over this! Maybe the thought that Coco is in heaven, playing and running around happily will be of comfort!

I am so very sorry for your loss. I will keep your entire family (especially Shelby) in my thoughts and prayers. I cannot imagine the horror you are living with, but I do know the pain of losing a beloved......

OMG Honey, I am so sorry. How sad for your entire family. I hope you do call and report the incident. Yes, she wandered onto their property, but authorities should be informed anytime a dog bites... whether it is a child or another dog.. on their property or not. It needs to be reported so they can at the very least have it in their files that this dog has been vicious. They will not tolerate another attack. I know it is hard to think of that at this time... but the next time it could be a child who wanders into the yard.

I'm a lover of all animals yorkies and pitbulls alike, I don't think any state should outlaw the ownership of pitbulls what they should do is arrest irresponsible pitbull owners, my brother has a pitbull and a bull mastiff, I'm sure alot of you know that a bull mastiff is the biggest dog ever and he is a gentle giant around my babies, he seems to like it when Sabrina my smallest dog licks his ears he lays down just so she can come lick him, it isn't the pitbulls fault either, it's the owners fault one for not introducing his pit to other breeds and dogs when it was a baby and two for not watching his pit especially knowing it was vicious, I do not blame the pitbull I blame the owner, personally I would of been arrested if it was my yorkie, because somebody would of been in the hospital not just my yorkie!!!

OMG I'm soooo sorry for you and your family - and your poor daughter !! Please give her a hug from me too. What an awful accident but that's what it was - a terrible accident. It can happen to any of us at any time.

Where I live you need a vicious guard dog on your property if not be prepared to come home to an empty home, people around here will break into your home and steal everything you own and I live in the best part of Bridgeport, CT. It seems like the bigger your home is or if it's in a nicer area it is targeted. In reality if someone owns a guard dog for that purpose just to guard their property and keep strangers off then you have to expect that kind of reaction, the pit was doing what it was trained to do and that was to protect it's home. NO it is not right that a precious yorkie lost it's life, but at the same time again I must stress this I do not blame the pit, I blame the pits owner. It's obvious the dog was trained to react in that manner when something or someone entered it's territory. Maybe you could sue the pitbulls owner for training it's dog to be so vicious.
