What would you pay for a mixed dog? I don't want to start a controversy here. I know some of you don't agree with 'purposely' mixing breeds. But, for those of you who don't have a problem with it, how much would you pay for a purposely mixed dog? As many of you may already know, I am in search of a playmate for Esme, and my husband wants me to look around and see whats out there. He also doesn't want to spend as much as we did on Esme. Of course, I know she's worth every penny, but he can be hard headed sometimes. Anyhow, in my search for the perfect companion for Esme, I have come accross some mixes. Some are ridiculously expensive, but some are A LOT cheaper than purchasing another yorkie. Of course I am still looking into rescues, etc, but most of those dogs are older and Esme needs a pup who can keep up with her. Thanks guys! |
Well, I am not to good at answering this question because I paid $700 for memphis and he is a mix. But my reason for paying that much was because if I didn'the was going to be used for pit bull bait. However, I would more than likely pay a few hundred no more than $400 i would say for a mix. But then again I would be picky about the mix. I would want either a yorkie/maltese, yorkie/chihuahua, or a yorkie-poo. What kind of mixes were you looking into?? |

chi/pom would be a great mix I think. Just curious, what are they asking for it? I love chihuahuas. I think they are great little dogs and it would make a great playmate for Esme. |

That isn't really a bad price considering that they are a "designer" dog at the moment. Seems pretty cheap compared to some of the other pricing I have seen on the same kind of mix. |
I would say 300-500 depending what the breeds were. |

Oh I know, I was actually just looking to see what they were priced at there on the net. $450 is cheap I would say compared to what I have been finding. |
I'd pay $150 which is the adoption fee at our local humane society |
i would pay no more than $$500 good luck on your search :D |
I wouldn't pay much, What ever the adoption fee was!! I think it is around $30.00 where I live. But, I'm probably not the norm.. There is a lady that I work with who wants a Labadoddle. (labador/poodle mix) and she says they are going with $1600. Which I think is highway robbery..(but that s me!!) |

I'm not a "big dog" person but if I ever got one I would want one that doesn't shed! My husband is not a poodle person but I bet he would love a "labradoodle" if I could convince him that a mix isn't bad. My husband is a big "papers snob" as I teased him b/c when we 1st shopped for a dog, I found plenty of cute yorkie/maltese mixes in town for a great price but my husband said no way. He wouldn't get a dog unless it was registered with the AKC. The "non-shedding" issue is a big deal to me and my hubby also. :) Now that we have a purebred I don't think I could get a mix, for a toy breed anyway...so I don't know what I'd say I'd pay for it. But back when I was looking at mixes I wouldn't pay more than $250, that was max. |
Hi. I'm new here.. and probably can't help, but we just got a yorkie pom for FREE! Not sure where you are located and if you want a pup or not, but if you are willing to drive for one, I know they are giving them away and so forth. PM me if you want more info! :) You can PM me on here or maybe on yahoo -- I am behindmyangeleyes on there! |
I would suggest the price would be whatever the rescue, SPCA or pound charges for them.. |
I actually think the spca deserves more for all the care they give. I think it is worth atleast $300 to pay someone for a mix breed dog. I am sure the cost of whelping and raising a litter in a proper way costs no less for a mix than a purebred. I don't think it is too much to ask for a breeder to want to be compensated even if it was an oops and completely their fault. You would want the breeder to make sure your potential pup had all the best in the beginning and that costs money, even for a mixed breed. |
Biddy was $400 and she is a Yorkie/Jack Russell. good luck on your search!! :) |

I completely agree here. Alot of shelters charge alot of money for some dogs because of the care that goes into them. And raising a litter of pups is not cheap. |

there that will pay it, just after they finish off paying for the Brooklyn Bridge. |

I value mixed or, as those who do not discriminate in the athletic dog events. like to call them, All Americans, just as much as I do the purebreds so, if there was puppy that was so unique and unusual that I just had to have it and it had everything I was looking for for my family, then I would pay whatever the breeder felt was fair. I have seen mixes that were so unigue and darling and no way of ever getting it again so it is a "one of a kind" and that is valuable to me because I like unique. I do not equate mixed breeds directly from a breeder with the dogs you find in shelters because those in the shelter usually have been mistreated, are older, have behavioral issues or other things which make them less desirable, however not less deserving. I believe most good breeders deserve way more than what they typically ask for their puppies and I for one would rather pay more to insure that the breeder has the money to give the puppies and their parents the very best care. I would feel badly if I didn't pay enough to compensate the breeder for all that went into the care of that litte rincluding the prenatal care for the mother as wellas the breeders time which they rarely count in when setting the price. If our furbabies are truly "priceless" to us, then I think it is hypocritical not to expect the breeder to provide the best of care and not expect to pay for it. We all want babies who had the best start in life and it is the breeders who give them that. Bottom line is I would pay the same price for a mixed breed as I would for a purebred because one is no more valuable than the other to me. |

I have a golden retriever that I love!! We paid $30 for him at the local pound several years ago. He's about 10 now. He came fully trained and the best personality and I fully trust him with my kids. I would have paid a LOT more for him! BUT I probably would not ever get another one, you know why? He sheds...a lot. If I could have a goldenretriever with his personality but didn't shed, I would pay 1600 for him. Because those qualities are important to ME and it would be worth it. |

Very well said Kim. I myself have 2 mixed breed dogs and I think they are both the greatest. Take a look at Memphis. Do you really think that I could get another one of him by just crossing a chinese crested and a cairn?? I dont think so. He is soooooo unique. And that is part of what I love about him. Same with recon. He is also unique. So I guess my bottom line is that I would pay a high price for a mixed breed pup also if it was truly what I was looking for. |
Baiscally if they needed a home i'd pay how ever much was nesscary, if they didn't i'd pay about $500. |
There are a lot of free mix puppies out there looking for homes have you read the Pet classifieds? Plus theres the humane society They are only 30.00 for a puppy where I live. Good luck in finding a new puppie. |
mix our local shelter has pompoos an a pomerian am poodle that came from a collector they are young dogs an their adoption fee is 65.00 they just adopted out a old english bulldog for the same fee |
wow that is cheap. |

i would pay $450 ...which is how Rex cost us...he is a yorkie/maltese. but the $$ u actually spend on the dog is the same as any purebred. good luck on your search :p |
Macy is 3/4 Yorkie and 1/4 Lhasa Apso, what a mix! She was only $200.00- I think about the steal I got and I am so greatful! She is my baby! At 4 1/2 months she weighs 5.6 pounds. I am hoping she will be under 10 pounds, her mom was 7 lbs and her dad 5 lbs. |
