All in all I would have to say that it is a good price. Check out the pups and see if you fall in love. If not then it isn't the pup for you and move on.

I will pay around $500 for a mix. I think the price the lady is asking is a good price. Good luck. :)

I paid $600 for Cruz. He's a yorkie/chi mix. He parents weren't bred purposely. I don't regret paying that much for him. He has beautiful parents, in my opinion he was very well worth it!!

You pick the baby you want and pay what is necessary to get him/her, as long as you can afford that price and it is within your range! ;) I have a mix I paid $125.00 for at a no kill shelter. He is a peke-pom! LOLOLOLOL :confused: I have no idea what he really is but he sheds terribly, and we love him immensely and I call him my little farm boy! :D :thumbup:

I don't have an issue with mixed breeds, and here's why: If it weren't for mixing breeds, Yorkies, and most other breeds, wouldn't exist. Just look at their histories. Yorkies are a mix of at least three breeds.
One of the people in my obedience class had a goldendoodle, and it was an awesome dog. My rescue dog, a Norwegian elkhound cross, is absolutely the best dog I've every owned (I also have a Yorkie and a toy poodle). Mixes tend to have what's called hybrid vigor, meaning that they tend to live longer than purebreds.
If you really like a certain mix, then pay what you're comfortable with.... :)

Totally agreeing with you PinkMartini.. I would pay 85.00 pound which is what our adoption fees are here. lots of puppies in the rescue centres :)

400-500 and that is for one that would stay small.

i would never pay more than a couple of hundred dollars for a mixed if anything.

I would suggest you checking the newspaper, shelter and vet's bullentin board for a playmate. There are so many people selling their small breed puppies for a very reasonable price. I have seen Chi mix from $25 to $50.

My sister paid $700 for a Schnoodle (schnauzer/poodle)!!!! I paid less than that for Pippa. I couldn't believe she paid that much. They love their little guy, and he is adorable, although my sister has said a few times she wishes they got a Yorkie because she likes Pippa so much.

Pay what you feel is right. I think they are adorable, and If you like Poms and Chihuauas go for it.

My very personal rule of thumb is about half what I'd pay for a purebred. All our dogs started out as somebody's design. I like the idea that although they are not "pure" you at least know what the mix is. I'd love to be the kind of person that could go get a pound dog and be happy, but my childhood was full of unknown mixes that were disasters and I'm just not up to it. I love Yorkies. I love Maltese. That's probably my next dog.

Thank you for all of your responses. My search CONTINUES. My HUSBAND who said he didn't want to spend the money on another yorkie has now decided that he would rather spend more and get a pure bred then pay for a mix. AUGH! MEN! So, I am still looking. My dream of course, is to have another yorkie... I will keep you guys posted!

I would pay for one! In fact we paid $110.00 for our JackRussell/Lab mix. She is UTD on shots and microchipped though. I just got a yorkie/pom for free last night! :D

ROTFL :D Yeah, what she said :) With just a few exceptions purebred dogs in our area are running 1,000. or so. These same breeds used to be in the 350-400 dollar range and "mixed" breeds were cheap or free. Now I see mixed breeds who've been giving hyphenated names selling at $500. These are the same ones that used to be free or under 100.00. Personally I wouldn't spend $500.00 on a mixed breed, but that's just me, if you're comfortable with it, then go for it. If I wanted a mixed breed dog, I'd go to the ASPCA or pound, there are plenty of pups there that need love too.

PS. The "best" dog we ever owned was a mixed breed....sheltie and westhighland terrior. She was an absolute joy :animal36

This has turned out to be a very interesting thread. Please don't get me wrong I have nothing against mixed breeds, in fact until recently I've always had at least one along with my purebred yorkies. What I have a huge problem with however is paying for mixed breeds produced by puppymills and backyard breeders. There is a vast difference in how breeders choose breeding stock when they are attempting to develop a new breed and breeding stock at puppymills or backyard breeders. Responsible breeders breed for specific criteria, ie temperment, size, coat, colour etc. Puppymills breed without any concern for the end result, they are simply interested in producing something that will bring in fast money, ie "fashion dogs". In fact if you buy one of those you have no guarantee that what you are getting is what they say it is as there's no way to trace the lineage. Further you are supporting a horrific industry.

If anyone is considering obtaining a pet of any kind they should first consider the qualities/characteristics they are looking for. Temperment, size, coat, etc. Then decide what breed will best suit. If you intend to go the mixed breed road, consider the characteristics of both breeds to see if they meet your requirements. What happens in most cases with puppymills is that they are not breeding for characteristics, they are breeding for cuteness.

For example, one of the "fashion dogs" of the day is a chi mix. So take a yorkie and mix it with a chi. Yorkies are very headstrong, high maintenance dogs. Enter the chi who tends to be high energy, yappy, agressive. So do you really think you are going to get a cute little cuddly quiet long haired low maintenance dog from that mix. Highly unlikely.

Years ago the maltipoo was the breed of the hour. They crossed the maltese with toy poodles. Very popular, they were everywhere and cute as can be. I've owned several (rescues). Take the fine silkyness of a Maltese coat and couple that with the tight dense curly coat of the poodle. What you got was a dog with a coat that matted at the first raindrop. These animals required constant grooming. Needless to say many found their way to the SPCA shelters around the world.

Chi mixes - the shelters are full of them. If you must have a mix then rescue one from a shelter.

Yorkie mixes - this is my biggest heartbreak. There's not much doubt in my mind that Yorkies are the greatest dogs going. However they require a considerable amount of care and attention not to mention $$$. If you can't afford to spend an average of $100.00 a month for vet bills, grooming etc then a Yorkie is not the dog for you. Yorkie mixes at the end of the day will likely cost you far more than that. Why you ask, well because you are mixing a breed known for medical problems. So add in the potential medical problems of another breed and you are doubling your money. Far too many yorkie mixes end up in rescue homes because the owners who weren't prepared to spend the $ required to buy a purebred bought a mix from irresponsible breeders only to find out at the end of the day it is still a very costly animal to own.

Responsible breeders will not sell you a dog without interviewing you first to make sure you know what it is you are getting into and whether or not you are prepared. Those selling mixed breeds don't usually care where the dog goes just so long as they get their money.

The only way to stop puppymills and backyard breeders to is stop rewarding them by paying them for their dogs. Take away the market and you'll put a huge dent in the numbers of puppymills around.

Mistakes do happen and thus the true crossbreed is born. We love them all and they are no less wonderful pets than those with fancy long names and papers. The difference is most people who have produced a litter of crossbreeds by accident aren't charging huge amounts of money for them. It's not a business.

Shelters charge varying amounts based on the operating costs of the shelter. Almost all shelters will insist that the animal be neutered before leaving the shelter, thus cutting down on the number of crossbreeds out there.

some mixed breeds are bred for great reasons aswell, i read that the labradoodle, was bred so that blind people with allergies could still have the benefit of a guide dog, that was how they first started, dont know how true this is???

I would also adopt a mix breed, i would never "buy" it...regardless of price. Esme's Mom, did you check with the humane society? They can add you to a waiting list there...also at the local animal control, there is always chihuahas there (that's where we got ours from)

The problem with that is you never know what you get when you mix breed. What happens to the puppies that inherited the labrador coat instead of the poodle coat?


As for the question what I would pay for a mix. It would have to be the cost of the adoption fee from a rescue or free from private party.

My brother-in-law's brother had a bit of an accident with his two dogs and ended up with chi-Shi Tzu mix puppies. I did not know what to expect when I first went to see them. They were so unbelievably precious!!! Just little black and white furballs! They just looked like little Shi Tzus! They kept 2 and gave the others away.

I just noticed that i had to put a lot of space between the name of the pups in order for it to show up without little *****- how funny!

Well I think it depends on the breed... I just bought a yorkie/maltese mix for 600.00 which I think is a good price for the two breeds because where im from a full breed yorkie is about 1200-1500 and maltese are about the sam unless you get the bigger malteses! I wouldnt have paid more than 800.00 for him. He looks just like a yorkie no one on here who saw his pics asked if he was a mix!! However a Morkie is the only mix I would have paid before because I dont really care for anyother breed of dogs!! Im spoiled what can I say!
