| I just wanted to say that I got my Westie when my twin daughters were 1 1/2 years old. Yikes! He was awesome, and so were my daughters (with the pup). I would have not been so happy, tho' if I had chosen a Yorkie instead of a Westie, as I have had such a time house training my Trixie. It would have been nuts with the little babies in the house. Some dogs are easy to house train, and some are not. I do understand why you want to introduce a puppy into the house at this point in your life. I did to. I think it was because as a Mom, you "give, give, give" and a dog returns the favor. IMO It will be an easier time for you if you get a bit larger dog, either a large Yorkie, or a Westie, or other 20 lb (or so) plus breed. Good luck!

| I waited until my children were grown before I got my yorkies. Now, I have two yorkies and two grandchildren, who are 3 and 5. I never leave my yorkies unattended with them when they are here. Children are just too young to understand how small and fragile some of these little dogs are. If you are determined to get a yorkie puppy, maybe one on the larger side would be a better idea to have around children. Some yorkies don't get along with children and some do.

| Hi to all, and thank you for all of your input it made it very clear to me that Yorkie are NOT the breed I would want for now. I did say puppy is for my little boy, but the taking care of puppy will be mine responsibility of cause. Well........ I think I'll wait a little longer and might go for a bigger & more familiar breed (Golden Retriever). I really HATE to see that there are people out there who is trying to sell Yorkie to a family with little babies, knowing that Yorkie are NOT suitable!!! Anyways, I'm thanking you all for your time and great to know you care. All the best ; -) |

| Hi, I think the fact that the puppy is 5 months old is a positive note.It won't be quite as frail. I recently got a 4 month old puppy and have a 3yr old, 7 yr old, and a 9 yr old human kids. Before our yorkie came to us we had a 13 yr old teacup poodle, she never got more than 3lbs. Both my 7 and 3yr old boys were brought home from the hospital to Odette (poodle) at home and she did wonderfully. However, she was already part of the family when being introduced to them so they just became part of her pack, and my boys were tought from birth to respect her space, and she respected and loved them. When I brought Alastor home I explained that he is MY dog and no one else is to pick him up, no matter what. They weren't happy but because they had grown up with an aging tiny dog they have all been doing great. My 3yr old does get frustrated when Alastor scratches him when he is excited though, but he has been tought to just ask for help. My point, I guess, is that an older pup is a better idea than a 8 week old, make sure the puppy keeps out of reach of baby (even after you are sure they get along fine) because even when a yound child is trying to be nice it could severly hurt the dog or even kill it by just hugging to tight etc. I don't think a yorkie could ever really be a child's dog because they pretty much always bond to an adult. Like others have said, the breed takes a lot of care, is rather fragile, and mine at least, gets his feelings hurt easily. However, if you have both baby and dog's best interests at heart, you can make it work.

HI and Welcome to YT ... I have to agree ... my dog is less then 3 lbs. and I have a 7 year old. They are very good together and my daughter knows the RULES with the dog so she (the dog) don't get hurt .... I would have not bought one either being in the Toddler Stage ....

| I have dogs ranging in size from 3# to 80# here and I NEVER let the grandbaby (3 year old) around any of the dogs. At three he just does not get the whole concept.

| I have a 5.5 pound female Yorkie. I also have an 18 months and a 4 years old. They are doing great together and are actually great friends... But here is how I did and still do it to prevent any damage. I had Bikini when she was 11 weeks. My youngest was 10 months at the time and the other 3. I made sure I was always around when Bikini was little. She weight 2 pounds when I got her. As she was growing and the kids too, they learnt to play with one another. And I inforced respect on both side. Bikini is not the number one in the house. She knows she has to respect humans. My husband is the pack leader, then me and my two sons. She cannot jump on kids and she learnt quickly to react to kids movement... I trained her really well and she never bites or nothing. She is quite patient. The trick with her... she is a fast runner. So most of the time, no kids can catch her and she hides behind the couch or any furniture. She thinks its a game and the kids too. It really cute. Anyway, its possible to have kids with a Yorkie, but the parents have to be extremely vigilent... Bikini got sick at 5 months... not because of my kids but because of adults that gave her treats under the table such as sausage, cheese and turkey. She had pancreatitis and almost died... (Trust me the adults involve know who they are and felt really bad... they always had big dogs! They did it without me knowing) They are just tiny and fragile. Adults can do as much damage as kids can... You have to be aware and watch out! I truly am passionate about this breed and I think with careful parents, its possible! But this is my opinion I know there are others Yorkie Talkers that have younger kids with their Yorkie because we had a thread on this subject before. The #1 rule of thumbs is to watch out carefully and prevent any problems. Good luck on choosing your breed!

| I'm with everyone else, it's probably not a good idea. Maybe if you got one of the larger yorkies, but i'd say small to midsized is probably a bad idea for small children. when my sister was about five years old, she was holding my yorkie (probably around 2 at the time, maybe 6-7 pounds) and she dropped her face down on the cement from where she was standing. it was an accident and the dog was fine, thank heavens, but it just goes to show that they're probably not the best for kids. and my sister knew she wasn't allowed to hold the dog while standing, she picked her up so she wouldn't run outside. |
