Read the sticky here about what NOT to feed your dog.

Table scraps are not good, even if you homecook for your yorkie. There may be seasonings that could make them sick.

Not a good idea to leave clothes on your yorkie when you're away from home.

PLEASE supervise your yorkies while they are outside! It only takes a few seconds for them to get out of your yard, or even get stolen. If you live where there's a lot of wildlife, they especially need to be watched closely.

Take good care of your yorkie's teeth.

Teach "stay" and "come" commands early. Those two commands might save their life some day.

Yes, I agree!
Suzi is always finding "treasures" and thinking they are toys, goes in her mouth. I get so scared . She found a small earring in my room this morning, I got it though...
i can't let her on my bed at night, it is too high. However, she sleeps right next to me on her bed.

When walking your yorkie out and about ALWAYS pick him/her up if another dog is near....even if they look friendly, DON'T risk it. Too many friendly looking dogs turn out to be aggressive and could seriously injure or kill a little yorkie baby.

reclining chairs or sofa sections can be very dangerous. There has been at least one person telling of a yorkie being killed after being under the recliner when the foot rest was up and being killed when the foot rest was put down.

thank you for this thread We want to keep all the babies safe......
For sure don't let your dog run free - where there are hawks and eagles. That is commonly thought of as an urban myth, but it is very real....and I know people who have lost their babies to big birds........

Not to repeat, this is just my biggest concern. Where I live there are alot of eagles. Beautiful creatures, but dangerous to our babies......

Yes! We have to be careful of our boys around the recliner!

another good thing about the harness ,when your walking your yorkie,
god forbid another dog goes to attack, you can just pick the dog up by the harness, if you had a collar, perhaps it wouldnt turn out so good..
it has happened to me once and my b/f once, we both were able to free my dog from any injuries that might have occured from a bigger dog..

If you have ID tags on your dogs, be careful not to put too much info. I once heard of someone's yorkie getting stolen because they saw the dog and owner in the park and stopped to talk. They got the address from the tag. Also be careful when taking pics to post on the internet that the tags don't show the info in the pics.

Great tip! I was sitting in the car with Sophie and watching the kids play at a local park. It was super windy and I had a dress on so I thought it would be best for everyone if I stayed in the car . Sophie was wearing her new Puppia harness and leash. She jumped right out the window. If the leash wouldn't have been snugly wrapped around my arm she would have gotten hit.

Or even worse, someone walking thier yorkie on a leash and getting knocked down and the yorkie stolen...Even if you are going to carry your baby still put a harness and leash on and tie it to your beltloop or something. If someone tries to take your dog and its tied to you, they won't waste the time (or are less likely to) to untie the leash or take off a harness (they might a collar though - another reason not to use a collar)

I thought of something else. Use a comb to brush your puppy. I was only using a brush when Sophie was little and even though I thought I was doing great brushing every day her hair ended up all matted.

Be very very careful getting in and out of a car if your yorkie is with you. Yorkies are super fast. A friend of mine lost her yorkie last year. Zoie was in the car with her and she jumped out to run into work to get something and Zoie jumped out just as she shut the door. Zoie died from head injuries.

I'm so sorry.

Speaking of doors, be careful opening doors at home also. If you have children, it might be a good idea to keep a baby gate at the door so that your yorkie can't run out when someone opens the door.
