I would think if she can afford to hire a lawyer she has a good chance at getting punitive damages as well, because a pit bull's owner should be aware of the dangerous behavior of this dog, and many insurance companies won't even offer coverage if they know the dog is a pit bull. It's kind of you to help your friend like this, but the very first thing she should do is contact authorities. The next victim could be a child.

I didn't see your last post until I posted this. I wouldn't worry about the pitbull if I were you.

Oh poor little Dior - I HATE HEARING THESE STORIES ! I cant believe how many small dogs are killed by larger dogs.....My girls and I were charged by a pitt just a few weeks ago and ALL of what you just posted went thru my mind....I was lucky - I had them way up in the air near my face but that dog really wanted to 'get to' them.

on the flip side - my neighbors have one that seems very gentle...it's just too bad I'll never trust him as he seems like a big sweetheart....

Slades Mommy, I applaud you for taking the responsibility of dog ownership seriously.

I have never sued anyone but if this happened to me I would in a minute. To just pay your bills is not enough, people have to know that this cannot happen and stop breeding the dangerous breeds. We had a little girl 12yrs killed by a pit bull close to where I live......someone said to me that had another pit bull " A yorkie would kill just as easily as mine if it were not socialized" Sure These jaws lock and it is close to impossible to get them loose. I am not talking about people like Slades Mommy who do the responsible thing but others who rather than purchase a security system purchase a dog listed on the dangerous list by insurance companies because they think it is macho!!

Oh my God. You should be able to sue for personal injury against the owner of the pit bull. That and the dog should be put down. That is disgusting. I'm personally for the illegalization of pit bulls.

Pitbulls are band in Alberta Canada, I actually thing they are totally band in Canada, believe me I would find some compensation for the damage the Pitbull cause, matter-of-fact I would insist it be put down. Fight back it took your love one, so they lose their dog…Good luck

I'm usually not one to be really eye-for-an-eye about it, but to me a pit bull isn't a pet, it is a weapon, and a deadly one at that: to dogs, people, children, etc. There is a pit bull in our neighborhood that caused me to spend a fortune on a gym and now on a fence to prevent it from ever coming near our dog. It jumps its fence and is menacing as all hell...and the family just bought another pit bull puppy. They love to menace people with it, and they get away with it because it is behind a fence.

If people walked around with cocked pistols, it would NOT go over so well...to me "rescue pit bulls" is like "rescue a gun"...no thank you.

I am sorry but I am going to have disagree with you that pit bulls are like walking around with a weapon. remember that a dog is how you raise it. if you raise a pitbull with love and training it will not act like that. Irresponsible ppl train these dogs to fight and abuse it in that manner and therefore become a terror. This goes from yorkies to mastiffs. for example if a yorkie displays signs of attacking ppl it can hurt someone maybe not to the degree as a pitbull but it can attack someone regardless. It all goes into training. and that is why pitbulls have such a bad name. JMO

And to the OP i am so sorry for your friends loss. Plz contact the ASPCA for help since the PO will transfer it to them and it may take some time as it goes thru the system. ASPCA is NYC's animal police.

I still disagree- you can train a pit bull, sure...however that is not the case for EVERY pit bull...and on the average, they are more aggressive than other dogs. I do no believe that they should be kept as pets. They should be illegal.
so...maybe not a cocked pistol, but a pistol nonetheless, capable of killing if told to.

it sounds like you have a very agressive one near you and I'm sorry for that but I have to agree - they all aren't like that -

I'm no pitt expert but my guy neighbors got one that had lived in a cage his whole life and he is the most mellow dog I've seen where I live - I don't trust him it's true - but I hate feeling like that

I like the dog but due to their reputation I'll never let my girls 'play' with him like my neighbors want them to do .....but on the other hand - they have him so well trained all they need to do is say his name and he listens. When I say mellow - this dog is MELLOW. My oldest Chanel scares HIM....

Poor Pitts - they have an instinct that most larger breeds don't have - but - ALL larger dogs can hurt a little dog if they have it in their head to do so -

We just had 2 people mauled in Houston just the other day and they put down the dogs. IF pitt owners were MORE responsible - there wouldn't be so many attacks.

I even see teens now walking around with pitts - they think it's like a bad a$$ status thing - and you know these dogs aren't being treated with kindness -

I guess even a good dog can go bad - Our little dogs can just be too much of a temptation sometimes

And thats the problem... Ppl own these dogs because they DO give a bad ass status!! They are used for all the wrong things. Look at the history of bulldogs... they had the same status as pitbulls used just for fighting and when it became illegal to fight them they were no longer needed and thru time became house pets!!! and look just this year that are number 10 on the AKC list! So go figure... it will take time when this breed will finally get the justice it deserves.
