I have seen a few threads welcoming newbies lately and I was thinking, DO ANY OF YOU NEED HELP WITH ANYTHING?

Thanks so much for being so friendly! My biggest question is what am I supposed to do now until I actually get my pup!? I've read practically all there is to read here (though I know I've barely scratched the surface) and found a potential breeder (which I don't know too much about, beyond talking to her on the phone, but that's enough for night now). But if I'm lucky my future fur baby won't even be born until July'ish (and not home with me until December!). So other than jealously looking at everyone else's babies what do I do!?! ;)

Hope everyone had a great weekend and a nice Easter. And I look forward to whatever questions anyone poses (since I'll probably wonder about it too).

Welcome:)

First, you can just hang out on YT.
You can puppy proof the house.
Decide what foods are best to feed.
Look at the vaccinations usually given and decide if you want to give all of those, what ones are necessary in your area and how often they should be given.
Talk to vets and maybe even tour their offices to pick just the right one.
Save up about a kazillion dollars for toys and accessories.:rolleyes:
Read books on training and behavior.
Pick your groomer or read up on how to do it yourself.

I see a lot of people trying to decide what vaccines should be given one day before their first vet appointment. It is really best to take your time and research. The same goes for the food.

Thanks for all of that! I've got a running check list of things, like questions for the breeder (before born, once born), house training and general training ideas, and other various things but hadn't thought about some of your ideas!

Part of what makes my situation even more frustrating is that the "go" date is so far away. Between now and then I'll be moving (over the summer) so I can't do anything to prepare for puppy, since where I live now isn't where she'll live! But I'm totally trying to scope around town where are good places (groomers, vets, etc) but a bit afraid of looking like a crazy lady if I go to places now and then don't show up for services until 9 months from now!

Good ideas though! I'll add them to my list(s)! Thanks!

Hello, my mom and I have been contemplating getting a dog for the past several years. For the past three months we have been researching yorkies and fell in love with the breed. We have found alot of information on the pros and cons. The one concern my mom has is about how long a yorkie can be left unattended, everything we have read states that yorkies should not be left unattended, but realistically there will be points during the day where both my mom and I will not be home. Can yorkies be left alone for a certain amount of time or should they be attended to at all points during a day?

Welcome! IMO, it's not that they can't ever be left unattended but more that you have to make sure that they are safe when unattended. Althou there really are some uber-spoiled yorkies here on YT ;) , reality is that many of us work full time and/or have to be away at times. When they are tiny, they shouldn't be left unattended more than necessary. They need to eat and potty frequently - as well as play, kiss, and wrap you around their paws! But as they get older, they can be left alone for reasonable periods of time. I work full time but am able to come home at lunch time. So Coby is in a small kennel for about 4 hours at a time. If we are going to be gone longer than that, we build an ex-pen in the kitchen so that he can get to his food, water, and potty pad during that time. I don't think that is necessary true. Yorkies can be left for long periods but they do best with companionship. I think if you are away for 8-10 hours a day, it is best to come home in between and let them out though. If you get two, they would have each other making it even better (lots of training though). Another thing you can do if you will be gone for longer periods is pee pad train him/her because I just don't like the thought of them having to "hold it" all day. You do have to pay special attention to pups though because hypoglycemia is common. The chances of this happening can be reduce if you don't get your pup til 12 weeks old.

can some1 please walk me through? im new 2 this and need advice asap! how do i create my own post? My little man is sick for the past couple of days with vomiting and diarrhea. im going 2 take him to the vet 1st thing in the morning but in the meantime would like 2 help him feel better...can some1 please advice?

We are new!!!! I got my baby boy Maxx a week ago....things are going great thus far. He is not doing so good in the potty department though!!! Ha Ha Oh well, he'll learn!!! He is currently on Iams puppy for toy breed but I know Iams has a lot of fillers, I was thinking og putting him on Chicken Soup for the puppy lovers soul, but wanted some opinions on food types!!

Im new here also. I don't have a baby yet...I'm in the search and research process.
One thing that I've been doing for the past few months as I get ready for baby is getting into the habit of immediately picking up whatever falls on the floor or if I drop something on the floor. Or if I see something tiny on the floor where baby can pick it up and put it in his/her mouth. Coins, plastics, any food/candy (especially chocolate), be conscious of food/candy that may miss the trash can, etc... Hope this helps. Lots of bending! Good exercise!;)

There is TONS of information about food in the "Health and Diet Section". Some people here do use Chicken Soup. I personally feed homecooked. If you can't find a recent thread that talks about it, you can try to type it into the "Search" feature at the top center-right of this screen.

Here's a link that explains a dog food grading system that you can use at least as a guideline. At the bottom, many common brands are graded for you. Chicken Soup is a good food and many people here use that. Congrats on Maxx - can't wait to learn more about you all.

Hi, I am a Newbie here and I want to introduce myself. My name is Mel ;) & my puppy's name is Sashi Jolie. I am very excited about having her & would love to have friends here who can relate to the love shared between a Yorkie & her best friend. Her adopted parent...like myself. This is the first time I adopt a Yorkie so I am accepting all the advise & pointers you may have. I am also just learning this site:confused: so I might be a lil slow with it right now, so be patient if I don't respond to you right away. Welcome to you both! :wavey: I think you can do it right here. OR feel free to start your own thread and introduce yourself and tell us all about you and your pets. Believe me, it won't be long before you are finding your way around Yorkie Talk like a pro. One hint is to use the search function (in the blue menu bar running across he top of the page) to look for threads regarding questions or issues you're interested in. For instance, if you search on "potty training" in quotes under advance searching in titles, you're going to get a ton of good conversations that have already occurred!

Another hint when asking questions is to include how old your yorkie is and how you long you've had him/her. There are so many people here and I continue to learn so much from them. Someone will always happen along to answer your questions!

Hello all my friends'

My name is Danielle. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada although originally from Los Angeles, California. As you can see I am not a yorkie owner yet. I have two of the best golden retrievers ever. Miles and Buddy. Dogs are the best friends that just listen and don't argue back. I am really glad that I found this site. The information here has been invaluable in my quest for research on bringing a yorkie into our furbaby family. If any of the experienced people can give me any advice I would be more than grateful. Hi everyone..I am new here and I have posted once before asking a few questions. Thanks to everyone for all the help they game to me..I am from Alabama and am a new Yorkie mom..I had to leave my baby for the first time Monday but, will pick him up today..My husband and I can't wait to see him again..I wanted to share something else with everyone that I thought was cute..Monday as we were getting ready to leave for our trip we were going to shower together to save time and our little one was just standing outside the glass door looking in. We opened the door and he got in the shower with us..I think we are going to make shower time a family thing now.:)

I agree. Such a nice thread and thank you so much. In the two weeks that I've been here I've found a lot of valuable information and found everyone so helpful.

My Scooter is an 'old man' now. LOL. He's 11, was 4 and a rescue Yorkie when we got him. We've had a lot of dogs in the past but I've gotten more attached to him than any of the others. He's so devoted and lovable. How can anyone not love a Yorkie?
