Boarding....& so UPSET!

I agree, Veterinarians Used to board animals as a courtesy to their clients who did not have any other options. I have worked for some other vets after the guinea pig incdent and found them to be kind and ethical. My story is hopefully an unusual one. I did see the woman at a later time in a supermarket and wanted to tell her about her guinea pig but I imagined the words coming out of my mouth and I did not want to traumatize her. She seemed to be over it by this time. This was a small town and the vet was a prominant figure. He knew the local police, electrician, teachers, etc.. And his other staff had worked there for so long they seemed to all think alike. I was very young, and did not have the assertiveness that I needed at the time. I removed myself from a bad situation. I believe what comes around goes around. And if he hasn't got his yet it is coming.

Maybe YT needs to start a babysitting exchange.

That way if you live close to another YT member they can babysit. This would be great for those times when there is no one else.

I know one of my babies owners lives in Orange County near Los Angeles and flys to Oakland or San Francisco if she has to go anywhere for a long period of time. She went to London for a week and flew to SF, I picked up Winston before she flew on to London. The next week I returned him to the SF airport and him and his mom flew home.

I would be happy to babysit a YT members baby if needed.

great gesture! This is the main reason I am getting a yorkie. So I can take her with me. I have no desire to leave the country yet..But I know it can be challenging for those who have more than one dog..bless your heart..

I was just thinking about boarding our golden at the vet over the weekend and then taking the yorkies with me to my parents house. I guess the whole crew is coming now!

But that's not the worst......out of the corner of my eye as my husband was helping me to get the leash off Bella.....I noticed the assistant holding the 2 red striped beds we had left......(you can see in avatar pic)......they weren't even the same color. Drenched in Urine! I couldn't believe my eyes. I said to her....."What HAPPENED?" She replied.....I don't know. I didn't work this weekend. I was so Angry. I asked, Were they even taken out? She replied - yes, twice a day. I was so Angry, I just wanted to get them out of there and said LOUDLY.....they won't be coming back!! The beds were so bad, we threw them away. I hate to think of what they went through. NEVER AGAIN! And I hope everyone learns from my mistake. I spent today giving them much Needed Love & feeling guilty. I'm not sure how I will handle w/Vet tomorrow, but I'm not letting this go. What would you do?

I wish all of you could have a vet like mine. My Rickles not only terrified of other dogs but also has separation anxiety (I am his 6th owner and he doesn't want to let me out of his sight) When I had to go have surgery my vet said he just wouldn't do well at all boarded there or anywhere else. He said even if someone couldn't stay with them if I could get someone to come over that would be better because he would be at home and he would know you always come back there. Also, after I had Rickles groomed (at the same vet hospital) the groomer said that Rickles wouldn't stop running in the kennel. They tried putting him in a cage but he tried to tear the cage up. We have worked out a way to do it. She grooms him first and while he is still on the table they call me and I go out there and he goes from the grooming table to my arms. I have found that that works pretty well and I appreciate everyone at the vet hospital working with me. They all know Rickles and when he comes in if another dog is there I have to take him and wait in the care or go in the bathroom and wait. They all come and pet him and try to calm him down. None of them act like he is a pain or anything. I really feel blessed to have such a wonderful vet. Will I was recouping at home Rickles needed to go to the vet so I had a good friend of mine to take him. I called the vet and ask if they could help and when she got there they came and took Rickles from her and wisked him off to the back so he wouldn't see any other dogs. I really appreciated that. Also, if you want to pick up your dog that has been boarded during the weekend when they are closed they charge $10 to meet you out there to pick up your dog.

This whole thread is VERY upsetting to me mainly because I may HAVE to board Bob the end of next month!!! He has an appointment on April 2nd to be interviewed at Camp Bow Wow in Edmond, Okla to see if he qualifies!!!

OMG..Im so worried. I wish wish wish we did have the YT circle of people that would and could watch our beloved babies...I would GLADLY pay for that kind of care, wouldnt you all?????????????

I think most vets start out in their career by going absolutely above and beyond, but are quickly soured due to unrealistic expectations, overtly critical clients, and extremely long hours with absolutely no credit.

I'm sorry your babies had this experience. I would not board at a vet's office for the reasons you stated, but please don't blame the vet himself...

is collecting a fee for this service as well. It dosen't come free or cheap.
His staff should be trained in caring for the pets as well as giving potty
breaks, play time etc. If he dosen't want to be bothered with this than
he should not be offering the service. What is right is right.

My intentions were not to upset or worry anyone. Awareness is the goal here. I too have an awsome vet in Cailifornia that I would drive 6 hours to see if needed. Again not all places are like this. Talk to neighbors, locals and just ask about places nearby. Is there anyone you feel comfortable with coming to your home? let your instincts guide you..I trust mine. We are all here to discuss our experiences good and bad to help us make better choices. Think positive good thoughts only..no worries..

If the vets don't want to take care of your animals while you're gone, then they shouldn't have a boarding facility..!

Where I go the vet doesn't meet people after hours, a worker does. When the dog is left arrangements are made as to the time they are to be picked up and the person that meets them gets to keep the $10.00. If no-one can do it then they have to wait until Monday. Also, my thought is that if my dog got sick at the vet's boarding facility then they would be right there. I wouldn't expect the vet to check on the dogs boarding unless they got sick.
This would be the only reason I would think boarding them at my vets would be better than somewhere else.

How far is Waco from you? I would be glad to yorkiesit for Bob if he doesn't get into campbowwow. We would just have to work out the travel arrangements. I have been blessed enough to be able to help a YTer out before and have been blessed to have a YTer also help me. I know how important this is. Feel free to pm me.
