This is what I usually do, but when I did this three nights ago, he peed big time in his crate.

When I put Logan into the playpen last night, be proceded to tear up the pee pad (I couldn't find any tape) and scratch at the bottom of the playpen, which caused a lot of noise.

I gave up and put him in his crate where he was quiet and happy. Good news....he slept through the night in his crate. He's been sleeping most of the morning, probably because it's so cold here today

My sons yorkie did that, until my dh told him to turn a radio on when he was in the room by himself...he's never done it again since...anything is worth a shot
