| questions... please help. i have a couple of questions… 1.) how long does it take for a yorkie puppy to stop whining every time you leave him alone? my boy is 11 weeks and 2 days old, and i've had him for 2 weeks. every time i leave him in the morning to go to work, he cries like he's being dipped in hot oil! he's not locked in his crate, but i do keep him confined to the kitchen with his crate, so that he can sleep in the crate, but roam around the kitchen if he wants to. i'm not sure how long he cries after i've left, but i can hear him from outside the house! does anyone know if this will ever stop? if so, when? also, if i want to housebreak Kash, should i be keeping him confined only to the crate and not the whole kitchen? and should i not let him sleep with me at night? he sleeps through the night and doesn't wake up, but i’ve been told if I want to housebreak him, then i have to keep him in the crate at night… i feel terrible about keeping him in a crate for so long. 2.) when should i move on to teaching Kash another command? i taught Kash how to sit, but it's only been a few days. but i'm not sure how many times i should go over it before i move on to laying down. right now, i get a treat, show it to him, say "sit" and he sits, and then i give him the treat. but sometimes, i won't even have to say "sit." he'll just see that i have a treat and he'll sit. which i guess is good, but i don't want to confuse him by trying to teach him to lay down. thanks!

| He will get used to you leaving. It may take a while but what are you going to do? You have to go to work. As long as he gets plenty of attention and exercise when you are home he will be fine. Personally, I hate the idea of them locked in a crate all day so I say stick with keeping him in the kitchen. Even if it took me longer to housebreak mine, I would still do it that way. If he is sleeping through the night without accidents, then it's fine he is in the bed with you. The crate forces them to wait until you take them out to go potty but he is waiting and making it through the night on his own. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Keep practicing sit but start to teach him another trick. If you think he is getting confused give it a little more time but he is probably ready. I laughed when I read he is sitting before you tell him. Gus did that and for a little while he thought everything I wanted him to do for a treat was sit. Your puppy is probably starting to think the same thing so it is probably a good idea to start a new trick so he learns the difference. Hey, I just noticed you have a Gus of your own.

| I also hate seeing them in crates all day, but, prefer an xpen, as that way they can't chew up anything, like refrigerator wires, molding, wallpaper, etc. it's just all around safer for them. Mine don't sleep with me, hubby said thats why dog beds were made..we tried it once, but neither one of us slept that well, plus, my sister after 12 years, just stopped hers from sleeping with her..she's had pee and diarrhea on her pillow before, not fun to wake up too.. |

| Hi! We originally kept our Mariah in our huge bathroom but the pee-pad training just wasn't working. She would go on the pads but also all over in the bathroom. We decided to put an x-pen in the bathroom. It is about 2x6 and she has her pee-pads on one end with her food/water, crate and bed on the other. She has consistently gone only on the pee-pads since we did this. This is the BEST advice we have gotten from this site and it has worked so very well for us! When we get home we take her out of the x-pen and closely supervise her. About every 30-45 min we walk her back to the x-pen and coax her to go in the pen by herself and tell her to "go potty". She goes pee on the pad every single time and then we praise and give a treat! It's been working really well! If your puppy is doing fine at night - I would keep doing what you're doing! We have also taught Mariah to sit and she does exactly as you described. She will sit when she knows I have a treat in my hand but before I ask her to sit! LOL! So for the past 2 days I ask her to sit and instead of immediately giving her the treat when she does sit, I say "lay down" and take the treat down to the floor. When she's laying down I give her the treat and praise! She doesn't quite have it down pat yet - but it's coming! Good luck with your puppy...they are such a joy! |
