Carlos is being so bad!

We do not keep Carlos in his crate when we are at work because get himself out easily but he does really well and we had not had any problems in the past two months. This week has just been a nightmare with him. About a week ago he tore the edge of my carpet up downstairs so we put a baby gate up to keep him upstairs problem solved. We have all hardwood upstairs so he has no carpet to chew on so he decided to eat the dirt out of my plants and spread it all over the house. So someone told me to put pepper in the soil and I did and he left it alone. Then yesterday my husband came home and Carlos some how got over the baby gate and when at it with my carpet downstairs. I was so mad so we stuck him in the spare room to punish him. I really don't know what else to do with him. I know he is teething and still a puppy but it just seems like he is being overly bad lately. I am not really sure what to do with him We a getting him neutered soon and then I was going to take him to some training classes. I really hope that helps. My husband was ready to kill him

I hear you.. My Izzie is just as bad.. Puppies are hard work...Does he get alot of excerise? Sometimes it has to do with alot to do with too much locked up energy.. Plus puppies that have to much room to roam like to destroy.. My other dog Tobey broke out of his crate and knocked down the gate too, but he wasn't bad with chewing things or messing the house..thank god... My Izzie is a different story, her potty training isn't going as well as I would like and she only stays in the crate when she is sleeping otherwise she whines.. Puppies are just so bad, takes alot of consistent training

I understand what your going through. Chachi destoyed his fair share of stuff when he was a puppy. Now that he is an adult he never does

Sounds like you should invest in an exercise pen.

Trust me, we all have been there & feel ur pain...it can be frustrating sometimes when they are puppies and going thru their "phases". It's like the terrible twos! It just takes so much patience, even if you're ready to pull your hair out(or his!)lol but it will pass. Just be consistent with the training and teaching him what things are "no-no's". YOu may need to crate him in a full crate instead of the baby gate method or a XPen where you can put his bed in one corner and food/water and pp pads in another. When i first had my puppy I used a baby gate in the kitchen area where it was hardwood. I kept pads, water and food, toys and their bed. While they're out, you have to watch him constantly and use a firm "NO" or a soda can filled with pennies/rocks every single time he is getting ready to do something he shouldn't. With consistency and patience, he'll eventually grow out of it. I too had the corner of my carpet in one of the bedrooms shredded...she no longer does it & luckily, I was about to get new carpet anyway.

Your puppy is a baby. You need to baby proof your house first of all.... Potted plants need to be supervised! You can't leave a puppy near one and hope it doesn't dig, eat, chew, or knock it over!
You should but your baby in a safe place where there is NOTHING they can get into for their safty as well as to save your stuff from getting ruined. A create, xpen, or a room like a bathroom or laundry room would all be good choices. Make sure there is NOTHING they can get hurt on. You have to treat these babies like babies...they are!
I'm sure your baby will grow up and calm down in time. Enjoy him while he is young, you will miss it when he is older.
There are lots of threads to read on what people do with their puppies when they can't watch them.

We crate or pen when we are not able to watch Coby. (Reggie has the run of the house but he's 11 and doesn't get off the couch if no one is here to coax him ) Coby loves his crate (and it's one of the tiny ones - just room to turn around) and goes in without being asked whenever we put our coats on. If we're going to be gone for a long period of time, we set up the x-pen (we put a thick plastic sheet over the top secured with binder clips in case he'd try climbing out the top).

My suggestion woudl that for Carlos' safety, in addition to your sanity, he shouldn't have a way to get into things when unsupervised.
