| ![]() Hello everyone, I was just gifted an 11 week old male yorkie and I have no idea how to care for him.I know that sounds awful but my mom surprised my daughter ( who is only 4) with him and I have never owned a dog before.I tried to find some info on the net but I did not find anything really helpful. If anyone could please give me some advice that would be great. Thanks so much

| ![]() Make sure you keep the puppy in a small area whenever you are not watching him closely, to help with potty training. He won't want to go potty where he sleeps. I have a setup in my living room with a playpen, he has his crate in there with the door open, potty pads, water, and toys. I only feed him when I am home so he doesn't eat too much and poo all over the place. Definitely do not let him have the run of the house or he will never get potty trained! If you don't get a pen for him I would reccomend using a bathroom or laundry room to keep him in at night and whenever you're not playing with him or holding him.

| ![]() You should have your pup checked by a vet... With both mine it was in the contract to have them vet checked within 3 days. Bring a stool sample to check for worms. (Worms are common in puppies) Your puppy needs to eat OFTEN... at least every 2-3 hours when they are this young. Their blood sugar can get low otherwise and they can go into Hypoglycemic shock. You can read about it on the net. I free feed my puppy (I always have food down for her) and I give her wet food a few times a day to make sure she is getting enough. Your 4 year old can hurt your puppy, so you will need to watch her ALWAYS with your pup. A bad fall can kill one of these little dogs. Don't allow you daughter to pick the puppy up. If it sits on her lap have her sit on the floor only so there is no way a fall can happen. I can't stess this enough, NEVER LEAVE YOUR DAUGHTER ALONE WITH THIS PUP! No matter how good she seems with the puppy she is to young to know better.... Please trust me on this. I have seen small dogs be dropped by older well meaning children. You puppy needs rest. It can get sick if it is playing to much and not resting enough so make sure you give it time in the create or where ever you contain your pup so it can get sleep. These little Yorkie's are a lot of work at first but very worth the effort. Congrats on you new baby! We love to see pics so when you gets chance put some up so we can see the little darlin! ![]()

YT Graphic Artist Donating Member | ![]() Congratulations on your new puppy! What a great gift! Also, welcome to YT - you came to the right place! There's just so much to learn here. I made up this Yorkie Care Sheet to give out when my puppies go home. It doesn't cover everything you need to know, but it does have some things in there that most people don't think about. I hope it helps you. Also, we would love to see pics of your new baby! I'll post teh care sheet in the next post.

| ![]() Well for starters you should give your mom a swift kick in the rear. ![]() Volumes about "what you should/need to know" could be written. Some really important things to consider/research: * Pups need food every few hours--these little guys are at a high risk for hypoglaucemia (low blood sugar) because of their small size. You need to closely monitor the pup to make sure that he is eating and resting enough. * Closely monitor your daughter w/ the pup. These guys are very fragile and kids are...well, kids. (Actually, there are many breeders who won't place pups in homes w/ young children for this very reason.) * Make sure the dog has been vaccinated and screened for breed specific illnesses. Research those and make sure you recognize the sypmtoms. |
