| Hi! I'm New and wanted to say Hi! (also have a few Qs) Hi everyone, I'm new here and still learning how to navigate the site and go thru all the threads. Basically just trying to learn everything I need to know to raise my new lil bundle of joy! I was wondering if there was a book specifically for Yorkies that u would recommend me purchasing. I havent had a puppy in nearly 14yrs(although ive always had dogs up until dec. 07). So i am kinda new with the whole training, housebreaking, grooming (of a yorkie) thing. Id love to learn just more in general about the upkeep of this breed. Like, basic things i need to know about how their hair should be kept and cut (cut by a groomer not me of course). also, read a thread about their ears need to stand up or something. Before getting my lil girl i thought i was well prepared in raising her but the more i peruse this site the more i realize im in the dark about keeping her up to breed standards (ears need to be up? i have to shave her puppy hair off??? huh?) So please, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Im sure there isnt a yorkie "bible" out there but any good books on them would help tremendously. Thanks in Advance! Have a great weekend! ~V! |

| Welcome There are some books about Yorkies out there but I have never read them. I don't think those books could come close to the information found on this website. I have never heard of shaving puppy hair off. Puppy hair falls out and is replaced with the adult coat. You can get your pup groomed however you want. If you like the adults in the show cut, do it. If you like the shorty puppy-cut look, do that. My Yorkie has wavy-crazy hair, so she is usually in a puppy cut (growing her out now though). Quite a few of us do grooming ourselves. It is cheaper and we don't have to worry about abuse and neglect when leaving them with a groomer. Whatever you are comfortable with... You can always ask to stay and watch though. The Yorkie standard calls for upright ears. Ears that don't stand up are cute though. You can tape them up if you want or let them hang. It is your preference. If you plan to show they have to stand. Ellie's ears stood without taping. They came up on their own.

| I know what you mean when you say there is so much to know about raising a Yorkie. Before I joined YT I had never heard of an x-pen, liver shunt, how to make ears stand up, that tinies are often not the healthiest, the name "teacup" shouldn't be used, there are "teapots" as a spoof, gates, tatoos, raw feeding, holistic vets, allergies to foods, food ratings, darling clothes, etc. You name it, it is covered on YT. Enjoy this forum. It is absolutely great? Joanne |

| Welcome! You came to the right place to learn everything you want to know. Rosie is my first dog ever and I know more about dogs than some of my co-workers who had dogs their whole life because of this site I advice to look under the training section here and ask, ask, ask! The more you ask and read the more you learn. You will always get your answer here. Like Ellie May mentioned, you can't get real life experience from a book like you do here. Enjoy YT and you new puppy! |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk! There are soo many things to learn and so many different variables with this breed that I think it's an ongoing learning process. My suggestion is to just go through the threads on here, use the search button, and pick up whatever books you can about Yorkies. Also, google dog grooming/health, Yorkie grooming/health, YTCA (Yorkshire Terriers Club of America), or just post a question. Unlike other breeds these Yorkies have different kinds of coats (not just in color) so taking care of them is trial and error. I know I have some sites that I found helpful and when I find them again I'll post them! In the meantime here's a couple Grooming http://media.wiley.com/product_data/excerpt/09/07645688/0764568809.pdf Topknots http://www.yorkies4me.com/topknots.htm There's one about shaving and taping the ears... can't find it yet.
