I went to pull out the paperwork, it was a tad more than $10 -- it was only $12.50 apiece. This was the Home Again Companion Animal Recovery microchip, It's somehow connected to AKC -- the website is www.akccar.org

Well, if you've really done all you can do to find the owners & the vet can tell you the chip # , there is probably nothing that can stop it from being registered.

That site is pretty thorough they ask for multiple phone numbers, emails & you can also list other people for them to contact if they can't reach you.

Microchipping is still better because the odds of your dog getting lost is far greater than to be stolen.

I don't think someone can actually remove it on their own. Most the vets in Chicago automatically scan an animal when its their first time at the vet, just to make sure it isn't stolen.

If they were to remove the chip they would have to surgically remove it. I would think a vet would get very suspicious if someone came in saying they wanted the chip removed.

I have Biewer Terriers and when we have puppys the litter will get Avid chips before each goes to their new home. I send the paperwork and for 18.50 the new owner reg. their new baby. If sold the new owner will pay the same fee to reg. Avid is used by alot of States. We travel and wanted the most used. Importing the Biewer's are chiped before arriving so we put the avid chip in also so we cover USA.

Just out of curiosity, why not? It's a permanent identification, takes only a couple of seconds and is relatively painless. Seems like a great thing to me and all of my dogs are and will be chipped.

I've never heard of a chip "breaking." They're about the size of a grain of rice, so I think the chance of one breaking is about nil. There are always risks, with vaccinations, just getting up in the morning. I think the benefits of chips far outweigh any real or imagined problems.

both of my girls are chipped..we did it when they went in to get spayed. i think everyone should chip their furbutts because you rather be safe than sorry..

Most vets scan all new dogs I think, just to make sure. Also, you report it to the microchip company that the dog is lost or stolen and vets in the area are informed of this. There are printed out flyers all over my vets office from the emails they get of lost/stolen microchipped animals. When scanned it will flag that its a lost dog.

It is far better then tatooing the animal. A vet can't track the tatoo base. But with most Animal Rescue, Humain Society and Vets useing it for new pets. I feel you are alot more protect for your loved furbuddy. It an injection and not harmful. Remember what they perfect in animals usually get's to the human population in time. Ask you vet to show an demonstrate for you. Mine did.

I find it somewhat humorous that people still consider tattooing an animal, but consider chipping "painful" .

Getting a chip is no more painful than getting a vaccine shot. As far as those who say their dog will never need the chip ... do they get vaccines? Same/same: it's "insurance" you hope you never need. Cost? Puhleeeeese! We spend small fortunes on toys and clothes and who-knows-what for our little furry treasures: why is the cost to offer permanent ID showing they're *ours* "expensive"?

It may not be a perfect method of ID, but it's as good as it gets at this time.

I just pd for the registration in Dec. I think it was $10 apiece to register them - great peace of mind. Not sure what it costs for the actual chipping.

I just had my rescue Chi microchipped when she was spayed and the cost was $50. It cost $12 to register her. I think it's well worth it. Any time I come across a stray dog, the first thing I do is have my vet check it for a microchip. I know not all vets automatically check for a chip, but it's getting more and more common and I hope will eventually be required by law. Anything that improves the chances of getting one of my dogs back if it gets lost or stolen is great in my book.
