okay so ive been looking for a small female for FOREVER, and a few deals have fallen through. But recently i found a breeder around here and they seemed really legitimate with health guarantees and stuff, so i went to their house to pick out/reserve a puppy last friday. the puppies were only 5weeks so it was really a crap shoot--but i wanted to get first choice. I picked the smallest girl they had. She was 1lb 4oz. I made them weigh her lol, and as of yesterday she was still the same weight. Okay so the scary thing is... after i pick out my puppy, the mom walks in. Oh my, she was hUGE! I had seen pictures but no, she was so big. I think 13 pounds at least, and her teats were all sagging, and her ears werent up. It really scared me. He said she was 8 pounds but i dont believe him. I have a 7 pound yorkie male and he is HALF HER SIZE. Apparently the sire was 4 1/2-5 pounds. I am just so scared that the puppy i picked will end up being this huge monster dog. If i wanted a bigger dog, I would have picked another breed. I dont want a dog bigger than the dog I already have. I just felt so pressured. My mother was with me and she asked if that was what i wanted and i was holding her and I just said yes. I dont know if i was tired of looking or what. Ive been looking at growth charts and whatnot since then, hoping and praying that the dog i picked wont grow to be as big as the mom. I dont know what to do. I put money down on the dog already... so unless I want to lose that money, I guess i am on the road to keeping her. so i want to know is, is it possible to get a "teacup" from a "teapot" or am i just delusional? Do i need to come to terms? is my baby gonna be a TEAPOT?

do dogs carry pregnancy weight? maybe she's not lost all her 'baby' weight.

PS...what do you consider small....these are big puppies, but compared to a Cocker they will be small, compared to a 4 pounder, they will not be small...if your male is 7 pounds and the dam is twice his size, then you know she is not 8 pounds...I know I am harsh, but the mom is oversized and flopped earred, does this speak well of the breeder? Of course, if the breeders is asking in the $500/600 price range then it is fair...best wishes

exactly...after reading up on stuff i dont think they are that good of breeders. which is what i was afraid of... and no, the total will be 900 :( with a non-refundable $250 deposit

That's true! Better out $250 then the whole amount and unhappy with the dog you got.

I can tell you how it works for me....if you want a puppy, I take a deposit and at the time of the sale..(12 weeks or so) and that puppy is not going to be want you want, for any reason, you can have your deposit back...why force a person to buy the pup or lose their money...I HATE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS...it speaks volumes about the breeder and the reason they breed...give the money back and go to the next person on the list....they will be thrilled you backed out...see my point? I am out nothing...

You may be able to get your deposit back if you are honest with the breeder, if you decide you do not want her. The sooner you tell her the better probably. good luck

Peebles is a cutie..5 pounds..maybe you can get a puppy from her...the breeder might transfer the $250..

I have a "non refundable deposit". However, if someone was truly not happy with the puppy they picked out, then I would absolutely give the deposit back. The non refundable part came about because of a certain situation.

That being said, if you are unhappy with that puppy talk to the breeder. I have concerns about the dogs that they are breeding because they are so far off standard. Not that they can't be caring people, their dogs just aren't good breeding material. That's all I'm going to say about that. ;)
