I'm afraid I'm going to get a MONSTER 4 Attachment(s) okay so ive been looking for a small female for FOREVER, and a few deals have fallen through. But recently i found a breeder around here and they seemed really legitimate with health guarantees and stuff, so i went to their house to pick out/reserve a puppy last friday. the puppies were only 5weeks so it was really a crap shoot--but i wanted to get first choice. I picked the smallest girl they had. She was 1lb 4oz. I made them weigh her lol, and as of yesterday she was still the same weight. Okay so the scary thing is... after i pick out my puppy, the mom walks in. Oh my, she was hUGE! I had seen pictures but no, she was so big. I think 13 pounds at least, and her teats were all sagging, and her ears werent up. It really scared me. He said she was 8 pounds but i dont believe him. I have a 7 pound yorkie male and he is HALF HER SIZE. Apparently the sire was 4 1/2-5 pounds. I am just so scared that the puppy i picked will end up being this huge monster dog. If i wanted a bigger dog, I would have picked another breed. I dont want a dog bigger than the dog I already have. I just felt so pressured. My mother was with me and she asked if that was what i wanted and i was holding her and I just said yes. I dont know if i was tired of looking or what. Ive been looking at growth charts and whatnot since then, hoping and praying that the dog i picked wont grow to be as big as the mom. I dont know what to do. I put money down on the dog already... so unless I want to lose that money, I guess i am on the road to keeping her. so i want to know is, is it possible to get a "teacup" from a "teapot" or am i just delusional? Do i need to come to terms? is my baby gonna be a TEAPOT? im adding some pictures of the litter for your troubles. oh yeah, and im new. so hiii :p : |
do dogs carry pregnancy weight? maybe she's not lost all her 'baby' weight. |
pup How old are the pups in the photo's...? |
5 weeks |
pup PS...what do you consider small....these are big puppies, but compared to a Cocker they will be small, compared to a 4 pounder, they will not be small...if your male is 7 pounds and the dam is twice his size, then you know she is not 8 pounds...I know I am harsh, but the mom is oversized and flopped earred, does this speak well of the breeder? Of course, if the breeders is asking in the $500/600 price range then it is fair...best wishes |

I consider small to be 4 pounds or less i guess. they have a website here if anyones bought by them id like to know your experience |
Just wanted to welcome you to yt. |
Yeah, the mom looks very big in those photos (on website). Looks long legged and has a long snout. You already put a deposit down? |
welcome to yt and good luck with the new baby if u do decide to bring the baby home |
If you are unsure I would let the deposit go and get the dog you want |

breeder I can tell you how it works for me....if you want a puppy, I take a deposit and at the time of the sale..(12 weeks or so) and that puppy is not going to be want you want, for any reason, you can have your deposit back...why force a person to buy the pup or lose their money...I HATE NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSITS...it speaks volumes about the breeder and the reason they breed...give the money back and go to the next person on the list....they will be thrilled you backed out...see my point? I am out nothing... |
You may be able to get your deposit back if you are honest with the breeder, if you decide you do not want her. The sooner you tell her the better probably. good luck |
Peebles Peebles is a cutie..5 pounds..maybe you can get a puppy from her...the breeder might transfer the $250.. |
I have a "non refundable deposit". However, if someone was truly not happy with the puppy they picked out, then I would absolutely give the deposit back. The non refundable part came about because of a certain situation. That being said, if you are unhappy with that puppy talk to the breeder. I have concerns about the dogs that they are breeding because they are so far off standard. Not that they can't be caring people, their dogs just aren't good breeding material. That's all I'm going to say about that. ;) |

Why not call them and ask what the poster above suggested. That's what I would do. I would explain that you were surprised at the size of the Mama dog and you're really wanting one closer to the size of the dog you already have and just see what they say. It can't hurt to try. I have to agree though that Pebbles is a cutie :) |
Im sorry for your concerns, I am also worried about the wire around the pups in the photos you showed. It looks like the squares are large enough the babies could get their little heads stuck. |
Just tell them how you feel. You have nothing to lose! Nolee is bigger than I thought he would be, but I also saw the mom and he now looks just like her. I still love him just as much!:animal36 |
I would simply tell her you are looking for a yorkie within the breed standard and you don't think the mother meets the criteria. Hopefully she will be understanding and give you back your refund. I know I wouldn't want any of my families to be unhappy. |
oh man, i hope they are understanding! I hate causing a fuss. I will call tomorrow though, after i tell my mother tonight  |

Don't settle for anything less than you have been dreaming of. |
I just want to say hi , welcome to YT and good luck finding your perfect baby. |
If the baby is 1 1/4 pounds at 5 weeks, you should have known you weren't looking at a 'small' Yorkie. That being said, the pup won't be as large as the mother. They usually get their size from the father's bloodline so she may well be only about 6 pounds grown. I have bred an 8 pound mother with a 6 poiund father and the largest only grew to about the father's size, the rest being smaller with 2 'tinies' in the litter. I don't evaluate my pups for size, however, until 8 weeks old because even smaller parents can produce larger pups depending on the bloodline.:animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :animal-pa :) |
CKC Registered The website says that the mother is CKC registered. I would be leary of purchasing a puppy that is CKC registered. Here are the regulations for having a dog registered with the CKC: "Dogs over 6 months of age which have no previous Registration history may be registered by providing 2 witness signatures attesting to the purebred status of the dog along with 3 photos (front, left and right) of the dog to confirm it is ‘of proper breed type’ as defined by our current CKC Registration Rules and Regulations." In other words, as long as they LOOK purebred, they can be registered. |
well, they look sweet, but probably will be a bit bigger. I know Guinness' dad was a bit bigger than I was expecting, but I am very happy with my puppy. |

she might be ok if you go by this growth chart (http://www.yorkiepassion.com/growthchart.htm), it says your puppy will be 5 lbs full grown. you said she was 1 lb 4 oz at 5 weeks old (which is 20 oz), then i'd estimate 5 lbs. she'll be bigger than you want (you said about 4 lbs), but she shouldn't be a monster size. however, the growth chart is just a reference guide. there's no guarantee it's accurate. but who knows. just thought this might help ease your worries a little. this chart is universal pretty much. if you type in "yorkie growth chart" in google, you might find a different one, but so far i've found the same one on several different sites. good luck! :) |
Did you get a chance to talk to the breeder? I'm just curious what the outcome was. Wishing you well. :) |
Did you speak with the breeder yet? I would tell her your concerns. She obviously realizes that her dog is a little bigger than the norm. |
