It's a Yorkie Thing Donating Member | Dew Claws?? Ok I know most breeders have the front dew claws removed when the pups are just a few days old.... But do any of your furbabies have BACK dew Claws??? My Lacie has double back dew claws. How unually is that???? I plan on having them taken off, because they seem to bother her.

| I think that the breeder should remove all dew claws before selling the puppy. This is just my opinion. Taylor had back dew claws when we got him. I had them removed when he was neutered. They had a terrible time removing them. That procedure took longer than the neutering. If not removed I was told that they can catch on things and rip out. |

| My two do not have any dew claws. I think that their breeders had all 4 removed right after they were born.

| one of our pups had dew claws on all 4. We never did have them removed due to the fact she was a frail pup. She is fine now and but the main problem I have is that I forget she has them and they become daggers which is dangerous for her. I need to see about having them removed when we have her spayed |

| declaws should be removed at 3-5 days old as they haven't formed the bone in them yet when they get older the toe has to be cut off and the bone broken to remove them then stitched up and brought back for removale of stitches of course they are under sedation but the older they are the more painful it is for them declaws can get caught and pulled torn on things sometimes but not always i haven't seen a dog with double declaws but cats often have them

| My jack russel mix had a back dew claw that was dangling and caught on things so we had it removed when we had her spayed (1 yr old). I didn't realize that it would be painful for her to have it removed at that age plus, I didn't have much choice as she kept catching it on blankets and had actually torn it. They must have damaged a nerve or something when they removed it because now she sometimes holds that foot up like her leg has fallen asleep or something doesn't feel right. Poor baby. I think if it is not catching on things you might just want to leave it. I have also changed to a different vet for many reasons other than this. Last edited by tpaxton23; 02-01-2008 at 07:23 AM. |

| Most Yorkies only have front dewclaws. In ten years of breeding I have only had one female that had pups with rear dewclaws. I do my puppies tails and dewclaws at 4 days. |
