| Alpha Yorkies... Hi everyone... I have a question re: Alpha pups from the liter.. Sammi is the alpha pup from her liter of 4 (1 girl, 3 boys)...If down the line I wanted another Yorkie, would it make a difference if I purchased a male or female? Would she try to dominate either sex more? Thanks!! Fran

| I would guess it would depend how she is raised and how well she is socialize with other dogs. And more important of all, how the puppy is introduced. |

| I just did research about the alpha position. Very interesting.....it said if you get another dog, you must let them determine who will hold the alpha position. Once the alpha position is determined, you have to reinforce it, ie., by feeding alpha first, letting alpha have best sleeping area (preferably closest to you) and entering and exiting a room first. This article mentioned that if you don't allow the alpha to be alpha, that's when fighting occurs because they get confused. According to what I read, sex did not determine ranking. Look it up on line and see what you find. I think I just put alpha position in the google search. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/alpha1.html Here is the link I visited. See what you think.

| Thanks for the info and website... I guess my best bet would be to bring Sammi with me and see how she interacts with the pups Fran

| Is your girl spayed? If not, you may have serious problems with another female. A male is a better bet, less chance of fighting. If females don't get along, they will fight until one is dead. It has happened many times before when people left them alone for only a short time. I never leave 2 of the same sex together when I have to go out. Even though they may get along, I just will not chance coming home to find one dead. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | Magic is defintely the alpha with our girls...she has been from day one and when brought Sailor home, she quickly figured out that Magic was dominant and where her place was...they never had a problem at all!!! Now Sailor is bigger than Magic but Magic still is considered the alpha and Sailor knows it....I think you can whatever sex you want, it is all about how you introduce them, we took Magic with us and let her sniff and smell the new puppy and the other mom and dad...it took her a couple of days but she quickly adjusted to having a playmate!!!
