First of all, you should have researched the breed better before you brought one home. Yorkies are well-known for being very hard to potty train and many are often never potty trained 100%. It can take months to a year to get a yorkie pretty well potty trained.

Second, he's only 12 weeks! You've only had him for 2 weeks. You can not potty train a dog in only two weeks! Any dog! It just doesn't happen. A dog is not a cat that you can set down in a litterbox and then it's trained for the rest of it's life - dog's take a lot of training before they get it down.

Third, you bought him from a petstore, and petstore puppies are normally harder to potty train because they are kept in kennels (and often come from puppymills) where they've peed and pooped in their cage for weeks and weeks...it's all they know. So not only did you get a breed that is hard to potty train, you got it from a petstore which can make them even more harder to train.

Have you ever potty trained a dog before? It's a long difficult process. You need to learn to have some patience

I got chewy from a pet store and not only was he fairly easy and fast to potty train but he never went in his cage...I now know more about pet stores and would not buy from one again how ever you can never know how easy or hard a puppy will be to train, weather they come from a pet store or not. *

I feel your pain. My Meisha is a year and a half now and she still has her moments despite pee pads, and a doggie door! She goes out when she feels like it and doesn't when she doesn't feel like it, the worst part is if I find a piddle she puts her ears back and runs out the doggie door and looks in at me! I think they are just stubborn little buggers! Hang in there I hear it gets better...Lots of love, praise and patience!

My theory about house-breaking a Yorkie IS: Every Yorkie pup should come with it's own Beissel Little Green Machine! It is a very hard breed to house break, my Silky was never a problem, But, every Yorkie I've had is tough. Patients and more patients....there soo sweet and loving that most of us out here are wrapped around there little tails :)

Definately get a belly band. I use a belly band when I let Yoshi in the living room (I have new carpet) it really helps. When I have to confine him I don't put it on. It has saved my carpet.

My grandmother (bless her heart), always(and I mean always), had her dogs housebroken after 1 time of them peeing in the house...You know, in my lifetime, I have never met(and probably never will again)anyone that could do it how she did it, and dont' ask me how she did it, but, she did..I wish she were still alive, as I think about everyone on here could have learned something from that woman..When her and my grandpa would go somewhere, they would tell their chihuahua to stay on the bed and they would bring it home a treat, well, now, most people would say yeah right, like it's going to stay on the bed, but, I stayed home when they all ran to town one time, I called that dog off the bed, she wouldn't come, I went in to get her down, and she showed her teeth like she was going to tear me up...don't give up home, remember he's still a baby as we've all said, and he will get there..

They don't even make the connection between the urge, and what they're supposed to do until at least 12 weeks.

It's up to you to be consistent in training, and when he goes where he's supposed to go, have a Potty Party! :hearts6: Lots of praise, kisses, "good boy!" :hearts6:

How about POSITIVE reinforcement!!
When Bella was a baby I took her out and said the same thing everytime.
"go potty"
When she was sucessful I gave her a small treat. Even a piece of her kibble and made a huge display of how proud I was!!!

When she went outside to potty, there was not playing!
if she didnt potty we came back inside.

If she went out to play I said something different like ball or wanna go for a walk.
Yorkies are so smart. They learn. However it took Bella 10 months to get the potty thing down pat. she learned to sit in one day.
its not the same.
Having a puppy is like having a baby. they need so much attention the first year.
YOU have to be patient. YOU need to figure out if the time and effort is worth it to you.
Be open to YT suggestions and try to relax

pixie is 7 months and still has accidents...she prefers to go outside to toilet but if the weathers really bad i want her to use a pee pad but she just doesn't want to, i keep a pad by the backdoor all the time, it will be easier in the warmer months and she will be a bit older by then.

You've been given a lot of great advice! Might I also add in a recommendation? See if your local library has "House Training for Dummies.""House Training for Dummies." That book alone really broke it down for me and helped me to see the whole potty training process through Amelia's eyes. I have not had any problems whatsoever since I finished reading that book and applied several of it's philosophies to our daily regimen.

HTH & Best of luck!

^^^^^^^BTW - not sure why there are double "house training for dummies" up there? I tried to edit it out, but the second quote doesn't show up in editing?

when you get home, ignore him for a bit, he's so excited, sometimes dogs piddle. Once he's smelled you, you've been home a bit, let him out to potty, then get excited to see him.

I had to do this with my cocker, she piddled everytime we walked in the door.

Use the peepee pads, they are great.

I got Max from a petshop also and the first 5 minutes in his new home he used the pee pad and has been doing it there ever since..he came from a petshop potty trained..crazy huh I was shocked lol. knowing what I know now I would never get a petshop puppy again. I agree with you though it depends on the puppy how fast they get trained.
