I think that you should get a book on puppy training, they have great information on how to potty train using different methods. I take Jeter outside to potty and we have only had a few accidents, he is 16 weeks now and still getting the hang of things. We learned to watch for signs that he had to go outside, so that has helped us. If he is in the crate Don't let him out to run around first, take him out and say potty or go potty to him. Also if you are using both a pee pad and out side training, he is probably confused on what to do! Good luck, it takes time! |
Give him a break, he's only 12 weeks....he's just a baby! Would you expect to bring a newborn home and not need diapers? |
My advise.......get rid of the carpet......keep the dog. |
Of course not!!! my frustration is not knowing if I am doing it right and how to teach him to grasp the concept of potty=yard, not carpet! Quote:

LOL, I know, I am already pricing! My baby isnt going anywhere!;) QUOTE=bjh;1672494]My advise.......get rid of the carpet......keep the dog.[/QUOTE] |
He will in due time! :) Its going to take some time and you are going to need to get some more patience with him. I know what you mean by ruined carpets, Ive got my fair share, and many people here have replaced their carpets with hardwood or linoleum bc they were ruined from their lovable but chronically peeing pups! I know you researched before you bought your pup and found many many things on little dogs (aka - yorkies) being difficult to potty train right?? 12 weeks = way too early :) Hang in there, once he gets it down you will have a perfect companion for life! The first few months of kind of misery (get ready for the chewing stage) will be worth a lifetime of sweet yorkie kisses! :) |
Hi, your patience and consistency will pay off. Right now he is rather young and thinks he has to pipi frequently, but do get him checked for uti, just in case. Once they are 6 months and older they hold it a lot longer. I started using a bell hung on a key ring, on a string... you put this on the door, teach them to ring it everytime you take him outside, a treat may help. Also when he goes potty, give him a cheerio or small treat so he starts associating the good behavior gets the treat. When he goes inside, take him back outside and tell him pipi outside. I read somewhere that they are considered potty trained after 2 yrs. of age. Not sure. Trust me, consistency and patience pays off, Zander is almost 2 and doing really good. Good luck. |
It is going to take time, it could take up to a year before his bladder fully developes. Right now he is just a baby. You need to have patience and be firm but not scare him, otherwise he will become afraid of you and hide to go potty or worse try and eat it so you won't see it.:( I would invest in an xpen and enclose an area where he can run around and play and if he goes potty it will be easy to clean. Put the pee pads in there along with some toys and a bed or something to lay on. Here is the xpen I have: http://homeandkennel.petedge.com/Pro...CategoryId=381 I open mine up and use it long ways to block my girls in my kitchen/laundry room area when I am not home. Mine are 2.5 & 1.5 years old and occasionally still have accidents. I have tile floors and just sigh and mop it up. |
ok potty training survival tools.... natures miracle to take away the smell... Tons of paper towels potty pads if they work...I think you should decide in side or out and stick with it but that's jmo... A giant tarp to cover all rug area...and...sense of humor!:p Don't forget the book THE LOVED DOG is a great training tool. |

Gino is 10 mos tomorrow and Bianca goes on the pads but misses most of the time because she hangs her back end OFF the pad!!! I have resorted to using bellybands on Gino most of the time. Needless to say, my SpotBot and I have become close friends LOL!! |
I have used natures miracle for a few years, but, have done away with it and am using advanage now.. www.usadvanage.com it works a lot better.. |
I haven't read but a few of the response's to your post... potty training can be a very frustrating time in your life, no doubt. It sounds like you are going 2 steps forward, 1 step back-and that is okay. We have a 9 month old girl. Confinement was the key. At only a few months old, she did not mind being in her pen (hee hee-we called it the penitentiary) at all. In fact she LOVED it. There she would stay in her little pen with a bed, a little blankie, chew toys, food & water bowls...and of course a wee wee pad. Which she rarely used. This way I could get things done at home and she could see me and was a happy little camper. She never had an accident in there. We would of course continue to run her outside every hour and give LOTS & LOTS of good potty praise. It will get better as your baby matures. Dogs are clean animals. They don't want to live in their own filth! Good Luck! |

First of all, you should have researched the breed better before you brought one home. Yorkies are well-known for being very hard to potty train and many are often never potty trained 100%. It can take months to a year to get a yorkie pretty well potty trained. Second, he's only 12 weeks! You've only had him for 2 weeks. You can not potty train a dog in only two weeks! Any dog! It just doesn't happen. A dog is not a cat that you can set down in a litterbox and then it's trained for the rest of it's life - dog's take a lot of training before they get it down. Third, you bought him from a petstore, and petstore puppies are normally harder to potty train because they are kept in kennels (and often come from puppymills) where they've peed and pooped in their cage for weeks and weeks...it's all they know. So not only did you get a breed that is hard to potty train, you got it from a petstore which can make them even more harder to train. Have you ever potty trained a dog before? It's a long difficult process. You need to learn to have some patience |
Patience is the Key. It takes quite a while to get these little ones toilet trained. These little guys can't hold it that long when they are puppies, as they get older they will hold it longer. For me I trained mine to pee pads because of how cold it can get here. Also these little ones have to go at the strangest times. If we are outside they will do their business outside. If you want to train him to go pee inside, then when he goes pee on the floor take the pad and mop a little on to the pad. Take him to the pad so he knows to go to the pad. He is just a baby don't confuse him too much. Get him used to using the pads,( that's if you want him to use pee pads) and then if you want slowly start training him to go outside. Also try to keep him confined to a certain area so that the pad is nearby, trust me when they're little and they have to go they can't go too far. Don't get too frustrated it takes a while but they are really worth the trouble.:) It takes time trust me once this little guy is trained, the frustration will be a faded memory and you will be wanting another one. Praise him every time he goes in the right spot. Mine are very treat motivated. These little ones really want to please you. I hope this helps:) :) ~Marly |
