| What to look for when going to pick out a pup We are planning on getting a Yorkie for our family. I was wondering what to look for when you are looking at the puppies and parents. What is the difference in black and blue? Is the blue they refer to the silver color that some change? We are not planning on showing the dog but want it to be of good health and temperment. We may breed her if we decide we want another Yorkie (seems like when you get one that you want more ), just to have one of her puppies but that would only be it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

| I'm not an expert -- but that said, temperment and health and the No. 1 most important things. Watch how the pup interacts with littermates, it's mom and with you. Healthy pups should be curious, outgoing and energetic, not shy and cowering in a corner. Their eyes should be bright and clear and they should not have discharge from their noses, eyes, etc. Also, take note of the cleanliness of the breeder's home -- it shouldn't smell like dog and their should be clean water, bedding, etc., in evidence. A Yorkie pup should not go home before 12 weeks so that he gets the proper weening, strength, size, and has time to learn from his mom and littermates how to be a dog. As for coat color -- the standard of the breed is blue and gold. The blue refers to the coat on the back that is black in Yorkie pups and begins to turn a blueish silver as they get older. As for breeding -- the breed standard is between 4 and 7 pounds, Yorkie females who are smaller than that should not be bred (because of danger to their health). It's funny -- a lot of people on here feel their puppies actually "picked" them when they went to see puppies at the breeder -- I know mine did. He looked me right in the eye and started to lick my chin and chew on my rings. What a little flirt! Good luck choosing your new baby dog!

| That's good advice by Archie's mom. I would also say just make sure you go to a reputable breeder...where you can see their homes and the parents of the puppies. Here are some members of the Yorkshire Terrier Club Of America that are in your state, Alabama...you could give them a call. I don't know these members but it's a good start to finding a beautiful and healthy puppy. ALABAMA . Cabat's Cathi Batchelor Mobile AL 36605-4246 (251) 510-9963 cabats@comcast.net P A Angel Julie V. | Hello!!! If I were looking at puppies, I would look at the residence and how clean the house and doggy area is. I would hope to see nicely groomed and friendly parents of the puppies. Temperments should be out-going and not shy or scared or snippy on both puppies and parents. Watch how the puppies play. Look for signs of illness like runny eyes, loose stools, snotty nose, dull sunken eyes, pot bellies, dry dull hair, or lethargy. Look at the pups up close. See if they are groomed and free of dandruff and parasites. Ask to see a shot/health record. They should have 2 sets of puppy shots and have been wormed and vet checked. Most reputable breeders will have at least a one year health guarantee and a 24 to 72 hour vet check guarantee. Ask to see the AKC papers and the puppy registration forms for each puppy. Ask to see a pedigree. Ask the breeder questions about the breed, her lines, any faults or health problems known, how long has she/he been breeding Yorkies, etc. Expect to be asked questions by the breeder also. He/she wants to know what kind of home the pups are going to. Most reputable breeders only sell with a spay/neuter contract. Some red flags: Selling pups under 12 weeks of age Dirty living conditions Dirty dogs Refuses to let you see the whole litter or parents(sire might not be there if an outside stud was used) Claims they are T-cups or "rare" colors Says registration papers are "on the way"(doesnt have them yet) No shot or health record No guarantee Breeder knows nothing about the breed(just in it for the $$$) You are not asked any questions Breeder just wants to hurry the sale. As for color, Yorkie pups are black and tan. You will have to look at the parents to see what color your puppy might turn out. A good knowledable breeder can give you a good guesstimate on what color/size the puppy will be. You might look at the YTCA breeder page to find a good breeder in your area. Good luck! |

| Good Tips. 1. Make sure you talk straight to the Breeder... 2. Make sure that you see the Sire & the Dam (Fur Mommy & Daddy) 3. Papers are always good like AKC, ACA, CKC, etc. 4. Make sure the dog is up to date on all its shots & documented!!! 5. Make sure you can make an appointment for the dog at your vet and that the breeder is okay with this... if theyre not there's usually a reason... 6. Good bill of health... 7. A year guarantee on health, most good Breeders have these!!! 8. The Breeder will give you a receipt. You never know... 9. Make sure the Breeder will let you visit multiple times before you purchase. 10. This is MOST IMPORTANT: Don't pick for looks, pick from the heart... When you see the right Yorkie, you'll know it!!!! I had a vision of my dog, but all that went out the window when I saw Roxy. I picked her up & I was addicted to her. I knew we were meant to be.
