| Congrats! Will you be handling them in the ring or are you going to have a handler?

| A good show yorkie Study the standard of the breed and then study the standard of the breed again. Then undertsand that the perfect Yorkie had never been bred and never will be. You must then try and meet the standard in what you show and breed. You may have bred a litter and just not like the head on one of those puppies but another breeder will see nothing wrong. This may be the puppy that is still good- has potential that you offer to another breeder/show person. In most cases you always keep what you think is the best for yourself. You must also understand that each judge has studied that standard and has their own opinion. That opinion will come into play in the show ring when the judge compares the YTs against each other. He/she will have to determine which fault or faults the YTs in the ring have and which one is closest to his/her interpretation of the standard. If you have been to a show- you have seen a judge give the win to a dog/bitch on one day and have the same YT group there the next day and a different YT win under a different dog. Grooming has a lot to do. A novice owner may not be able to groom the YT as well as a handler or a seasoned show person. They may not know how to make a fault not so noticable. Politics has always been a factor and will always be, A novice may have a wonderful YT- be new to the show world and not win just beacuse so and so is showing a dog today. The handlers have a advantage and so do the seasoned well know breeders. Attitide- there are a lot of YTs in the show ring because of who the owner/breeder is. They have a Ch. Sire or Dam so here they go- and the YT hates the ring. They show beacuse we want them to. You want an attitude that says - Hello, here I am look at me- don't you think I the prettiest thing that you have ever seen. Being a show dog is demanding and can be hard on a dog. Look at all the time riding in the car/outside shows that are hot/ all the down time/ the waiting and the grooming. To me a show dog must be able to pass his/her good genes on to another generation. You may have the number one yorkie in the world- but if you can't get good qaulity puppies out of him/her then what do you have? A lovely animal to look at. I try and look at confirmation first- I love good movement and will then try and put the whole package together as best I can. Always looking for improvement. Wnalegria |
