buying it- my holistic pet food store recommends Solid Gold Seameal ( i think it is called) but you also need an added calcium suppliement making it- you need 4 ingredients from a health food store... i'd say the upfront costs are more than buying but the will last you at least a few years..i just keep making up batches and keep it in the fridge.. when i run out i make a new batch if you want the receipe just PM me and i'll send it to you if you are looking for a book about homecooking you should look at Dr. Pitcairn's guide to healthy dogs and cats... it's great. | |

| Marci should be able to help you with this. She is lots better at supplements then me. Actually, I take the easy way out and use an all-in-one through a nutritionist. Marci, remember low phosphorus for kidney problems.

| I really couldn't tell you but this is why it is good to have a nutritionist help with these kinds of recipes. That is why the Science Diet (especially canned) starts looking really good after awhile. Home cooking for health issues isn't always easy...

| By the way, calcium and phosphorus go together in a way and have to be balanced in recipes. This is the thing Ellie's vet stresses most about home cooking.

| This is what I cook every two weeks for Zoey and Chloe Large pack of chicken breasts (8 piece) Boil until very tender and shred/chop fine 1 cup of brown rice. Boil seperate with 2 cups of water 1 cup shredded carrots boiled until tender and chopped 1/2 cup frozen peas mix all together. I serve 1/3 Cup to each dog twice a day. I freeze singe meals in zip lock bags. Once in a while I substitute ground beef for the chicken for variety. I add missing linlk and steamed bone marrow to each dinner meal. I also give a daily multi vite. Good luck!

| I am debating homecooking for Tia. she scratches at her face often, and I wonder if she's slightly allergic to her Canidae (regular formula) that she's been eating for the past 6 months. What are opinions on feeding Canidae (perhaps the "other" formula....forget what it is) for the morning meal and home cooking for the evening meal? Is it ok to do both?

| Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yep, can't stress that enough. It's an important balance to get the hang of. Maybe Crystal's nutritionist sells her own supplement or something?

| I was also debating Canidae? Any input on this food? Maybe one homecooked and one dry? but then I think he won't eat the dry and hold out for the homecooked because he knows he will get it later .... |

I use BalanceIT K (NOT BalanceIT L). There is an ingredient in the L that I don't like. This would not work for those who don't like to supplement with vitamin A. You can get it through animal nutritionists and your vet should be able to get it in. A couple of you want to homecook part time and do dog food the other part. That's fine but you will either have to supplement the homecooked (vitamins) or you will have to feed enough dog food in the day to make sure they are getting their minimum recommended amount of vitamins from that instead of supplementing homecooked.
