Maggie has part cotton coat, part silky coat. the back half of her is cottony and curly. the front half is silky and straight. I have the WORST time keeping the mats out of it. Have you tried Cowboy Magic? Lillies britches are kind of wavy and they tend to matt more than the rest of her. I will use the cowboy magic and a slicker brush, lay her on my lap and start brushing...I brush from the ends into the matt...I don't start at the root. Takes me over an hour to get the matts out. This really helps..
Hope you find something that works! When Lillies (puppy) coat started growing out I thought about cutting her too but, she has such a pretty coat...I was really torn about what to do...That's when I tried the cowboy magic.

With Slade I do a puppy cut on his body and fron neck up, he has longer hair. Everyone always says what a cute haircut it is.

I have two yorkies. One has a cottony coat and mats so easily. The other has the silky coat and never mats. Alyssa can simply go to sleep and wake up and she will have mats. Emmy on the other hand has luscious, flowing silky hair that never tangles. I take them both to the groomer at the same time. Alyssa comes out with very short hair and Emmy is left with her long flowing silky hair. They only trim Emmy's hair and leave it long. I know that Alyssa notices and probably does not understand. They both go to the same groomer on the same day and get two totally different cuts. I just keep telling the girls: Alyssa got the good eyes (beautiful brown eyes) and the bad fur. Emmy got the good fur and the bad eyes (dry eye and on forever medication. In the long run I would say they are even. LOL

well, last night I cut quite a bit off. But I did leave the top layer of her hair longer than the underneath (then I woke up this morning and read where someone had suggested that LOL)

so far, I think it is great. I still may need to do a little trimming here and there, as the cut last night was a quickie. but it looks really good. We are heading to the vet for our annual shots so once I get back, I will try to get some pics

My K I have to keep her hair cut because she is a water dog to the fullest and she has a cotton coat and she doesnt mind grooming but its just to hard to keep her straight, so I keep her coat low and her neck up long..

I'm in the same situation with Phoebe she matt so easy but I love her long coat, I'm just thinking to cut it short for the summer but I don't know what to do either, sorry couldn't help you more
