'Wonder Dog' Safely Home With Owner
Dog Went Missing After Fireworks

SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. -- After an enormous outpouring of sympathy and offers of help from the community to help find a man's best friend, his dog came home on his own Thursday morning.

Mike Porter's Australian shepherd is both his best friend and his co-worker. Porter is a farmer who lost his left arm in a wreck with a drunk driver.

"I can't get out there with those bulls like I used," he said.

That's where Porter's dog Shed comes in.

"He herds cattle, buck and bull, sheep anything. He loads bulls up in the trailers, moves around the pen. He does all the work," Porter said.

Friends refer to Shed as “Wonder Dog” because of his skill in working with the farm animals.

But on New Year's Eve, the intrepid dog's one fear got to him.

"He's scared to death of fireworks," Porter said.

Shed was outside when he got spooked by the sound of fireworks, and he ran away.

WYFF aired the story of Shed's disappearance, and Porter said he got about 100 calls from people wanting to help find his dog.

While Shed was still missing, Porter choked back tears as he said, "He never gave up on me. I've seen him get hurt and keep working, with a dog like that you don't give up on him."

Shed showed up around 7 a.m. Thursday at the family's house.

Porter said he was clean, not cold, and he was actually a little fatter. He thinks someone was taking good care of Shed and possibly saw the story and figured he needed to let the dog go home.

This is the second time that Shed has run away after being frightened by fireworks.

Porter says he's looking into GPS tracking for Shed to make sure this doesn't happen a third time.

Okay, is this the one I saw on the news lastnight, where that guy was riding around in his truck looking for his dog, he was in tears? I didn't hear where they found him, if it's the same one, I'm so happy to hear the update..

I opened the door and Delilah ran out and off went one of those loud cannon fireworks and she took off like a light! I have been walking and driving all around the neighborhood and letting people know to be on the look out. The fireworks are going off and will be for a long time. Tissy, I am praying for Deliliah's safe return. I know exactly what you are going through. I lost my little Rosie in 2007. She was microchipped and had a harness with an I.D. tag on it. I worried that she was cold and scared too. Chances are that she is safe and warm with someone right now. That is what happened to Rosie. Two little boys found her and took her harness and I.D. tag off because they wanted to keep her. After 5 days their mother told them that they could not keep her. Eventually she ended up in the hands of someone who took her to the vet to have her scanned for a microchip. One week after I had lost her I got a phone call from Home Again Microchip System and they told me that the lady that found my Rosie was on the other line! Rosie was treated like a Queen by her too. She slept with her, washed her and even bought her a squeeky toy. One thing that I didn't do that I would suggest for you to do is to post an ad in the newspaper. The lady that had Rosie for 2 days looked in the paper and did not see an ad for a lost dog in there. I posted all over the internet, but not in the paper. Not everyone uses the computer. Come home Delilah! Don't stop looking. There are a lot of good people out there that will do the right thing and return her!

Perhaps someone has made this suggestion..but just in case...tell the children in the neighborhood....with an emphasis on a reward. There is a lot of chatter on school buses. I'd also give a flyer to the mailman. Mailpeople are in your area every day...it's quite possible they might see something on their rounds.

Tissy, the folks at the dog pound and humane society must be used to seeing you come around every day by now. Same with the pet stores and vet offices and all your neighbors. You must be very busy replensihing your posters (because you know there are busybodies who will take them down). And I am sure you are very busy talking to the police, highway workers, mail carriers, even UPS and Federal Express drivers. How many neighbors are helping you out by papering everything they find with posters??? At least this is keeping you busy and could even result in your baby returning. You know, I am sure, than you can't do these things just once and expect results, so I imagine you are tired from the endless search, but at least you are doing something, and who knows, it might pay off. Oh my Gosh yes yes I would!

I hope that never happens but she will as of now run most times when called....she is so unlike my schnauzers who adore people and love to come when called...I treated and every thing I know...still she is head strong and runs away...or crouches and NO I have not hit or fussed at her. I treat, treat, treat, I dunno what else to do!

I feel so sorry for you and i am praying you get her back safe and sound.
It could so easily have happened to me while away over the new year at my In-laws, Pixie was petrified of the fireworks, I am considering getting her a collar just for trips to their house with an ID Tag with their address on in the event that she should ever escape while we are staying there.

suggeted to me by the humane society,to put needs medication and reward,i got my kaycee back doing this i posted his picture all over the neighborhood,big writing and picturem i got back within a week,believe are not they lived right up the road from me and new exactly where i lived,i did not post award at first ,but once i did she called be and pulled right up in my drive way,i even posted on my mail box. im goint to light a candle now for your baby.there a site for it gratefulness.org/candle.
