| is this true? HELLO YTERS I hope everyone had a wonderful X-MAS. I had a wonderful time with my family.Only I got sick the day after with a virus and it was a mess.I have only felt back to normal today but I did get on YT to look for about 2 minutes a day while I was sick. That was all I could muster QUESTION:my cousin and I were disagreeing that silk coated yorkies are born with a silk coat and if they do not have the silk coat at birth then they are modified silk.IS THIS POSITIVELY true? THIS is a question for the show breeders out there and can/do modified silk coated yorkies eyes shine green ??? if not what color. WE disagree because her pup had a silk coat from birth but his hair was short to his body until he was about 8mths we had given up on him ever having a coat and then it just started growing.he is over a year now and he is very gold on the face and legs and is just now starting to turn blue.gorgeous THANKS

| Yes puppies are born with the coat theyre destine to have this is a great page that explains the coats in depth http://yorkiepassion.com/coatcolorchanges.htm the above is a great article written by Joan Gordon as far as the eye flash... all puppies will flash blue as the mature they will flash various shades green, golden, greenblue, amber or red. Green or varies shades of green is usually a silk coat (but not always) a modified coat will also throw a green depending what kind of modified. A black modified that will more than likely remain black as an adult will usually throw a red or amber eye. hope this helps

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | so you can tell by looking at a 8 week old puppy what kind of coat they are going to have?? i thought you couldn't do that.

below is how Ms. Gordon explains A puppy that is about 3 to 4 weeks of age that shows gold hairs on the top of its head when the black hairs are parted, will as an adult have a clear golden tan. If the coat texture is silky, the blue will have no intermingled colors. A puppy that has a wiry coat texture, with a tan that is a very bright red gold by four to five months, will as an adult do one of two things: First, if the puppy as it approaches five or six months, or at least by nine months, shows the transition from black to blue, the coat texture will soften to a silky texture. If the black coat does not show this transition to blue, the adult dog will retain the wiry coat which will never attain any great length. A puppy that has a bright orange-red tan by four or five months, will as an adult have a bright steel-blue, which may have areas of lighter or darker blue. This coloring shows the greatest tendency to have the tan placements run into the allotted areas for the blue. The texture will be silky. A puppy whose coat appears sparse or thin will, as an adult, have a thick, long coat of the correct fine silky, glossy texture. This coat’s growth is like a human’s hair, in that it is born with very little but by adulthood has an abundance of hair, the quantity having doubled and redoubled all during puppyhood (or childhood). Both colors will be totally clear.

| i can tell that mine are silky coated almost as soon as they are born . At least within two to three weeks. They just look different. Their coat looks kind of thin and oily. I always tried to go by the eyeshine in cameras but just about three weeks ago, a show breeder "gently" informed that is not true and is a rumor that has been passed around in dog circles now for several years. I don't know. But I took a picture of Ceeby yesterday. In fact, I took several. He had orange eyes, blue eyes, green eyes, pink eyes and aqua eyes all within half hours time. He is a true silky coat. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i wish i had known that when i was picking out a puppy. Tho when i fell for Morgan at 4 weeks old i don't know if i could have turned her down for her cotton coat. Is there a way to tell by pictures or do you have to see them first hand?

| So, what you are saying is pick a puppy who looks like he is oily and bald? That is kind of funny because how many times do we read on YT about concern over puppies lack of hair? Especially the bald heads. It seems true though. |

| I have read this on yorkie passion feminvstr you told me about the site.I still guess I don't completely understand.three of my pups had the gold hairs when parted at 3 weeks and the last one was white or really light grey they were breaking on the head and two had a white patch on the chest and they have a thicker coat than the other two.so at least three will have a clear gold tan ok got that. Now the coat the mom is blk/deep gold she is either silk or a red leg with the course hair although it does not feel course but she is not growing hair on the legs and face???(she is a dog I took form a breeder who no longer wanted her) The male is silver and light tan little more coloring right in the face area I think modified although I have been told silk.the babies all have nice coats all a little different(thicker thinner) but the silk thing gets me my cousins dog was silky as a pup took forever to grow not thin hair just really short then all of a sudden he has caught up with my boy whose coat was always long. I could tell the difference in coats when they were pups but now my boy fell silkier to me.I got a new cp and now I can't post pics.I really want a true silk with correct colors and I was hoping one of them would be although modified is not bad.

| I can pretty much tell when they are born I have had a a few with dull matte coats and the rest looked real shiney and have grown up to have proper coats. I no longer use the stud that was giving me the pups with matte coats. But they were obvious right away. I have called people regarding puppies and if they can't even give me a generalization of what the coat appears to be I won't even be bothered to look. I have one male fixed with a soft cottony coat that mattes so easily I have to keep him short as not to hurt him while grooming. I have one that is a modified silk and three that are true silks and they are so much easier to take care of. |
