Problem with yorkie My yorkie seems to be spoiled rotten or either she has a nerve problem. Whenever my sister brings her kids over to visit Angel goes nuts. She is fine unless they get to close to me. Then when they come close she barks and acts like she wants to tear them up. She doesnt like them to give me kisses or hugs. She has recently been biting at her back side and she has a bald spot from it. I have checked for fleas....nothing. Plus I always give her her once a month flea medicine. Could possibly the kids be getting on her nerves causing her to act this way? My other yorkie doesnt pay them any mind. I have been leaving a lot lately doing things and Angel has a fit to go. She is 3 and never acted this way before. I dont understand exactly whats going on. Any help would be appreciated.

i know yorkies are known to be very protective and particular about the people they let near them and their owners..... as for the scratching, my yorkie pup has been doing the same thing (no fleas) maybe it is the time of year (i know my moms dogs always get really bad skin at this time of year) or allergies? i've been looking into getting toby some new shampoo ( i have been using the puppy tearless and i would like to continue using this but maybe i could also use something that moisturizes the skin??? any ideas would be appreciated)..... Now, as for the bahavior agression with the kids.... maybe you could introduce interaction very slowly and have the kids give the dog treats when they first come in, this would associate the visit with "happy things" and maybe over time the agression will cease.

My vet gave me a spray to spray on Angel when itched like that. However she gets mad at me when I use it on her....lol She acts like it kills her or something. My vet did say she could have one flea and be allergic to it and it cause excessive itching. Thanks for sharing your comments with. I appreciate it.

what was the spray he gave you? was it to stop the itching itself or to discourage her from itching (like bitter apple) ??? as an afterthought , it would suck to be a dog and be allergic to fleas

allergies My vet told me on a visit a few weeks ago that the winter allergies are in full force with pets. They gave Simon a small antihistamine pill, to take for a few weeks and he is fine. He was chewing at the fur on his feet and legs as well, with some ear scratching too. You might ask for that if the spray doesn't seem to help. Jeni

orinskye Being as im not home I cant recall the name of the spray right now sorry. I know it is in a white and gray bottle and came from the vet. Yes it would suck to be a dog and allergic to fleas....lol Its hard to put anything on here without her getting mad at me. She will ignore you when you make her mad. She acts just like a little kid.....lol

Maddie had to get a shot a couple of weeks ago because she was scratching, chewing on her feet and rubbing her butt like her anal gland was bothering her. Doc said it was the time of year and all the pollan and stuff in the air bothers some dogs. This sounded strange to me about the butt scooting, Doc said it was from the stuff in the air, she was breathing into her sytem. He did check her gland and it was clear. She is fine now not scratching at all. Hope she feels better soon..........Cindy

The scratching could be allergies. You should try changing her diet to a hypoallergic food. Dry skin could also be bothering her. My Maddie does the same thing every Spring and Fall and had to go on steriods last Fall for it. I hope she gets better! My aunt's dog is super protective of my mom. I wasn't able to hug her or kiss her or move too fast toward her for awhile, but he has calmed down a lot.

I think it may be in part due to separation anxiety, and jealousy that you are giving someone else more attention. Try to before and after they leave, have some alone time for her to play or go for a walk or something else shes likes to do, so she feels that she is always important in your life. When she does bark or growl at them, give her a stern no, or crate her or discipline her in the way you normally do.

The thing is she very rarely requires descipline. She ia usually a very well behaved dog. I did catch my nephew taunting her. I told my sister I wasnt going to keep getting on Angel for barking at him. She is fine as long as he stays away from her. She has never bitten anyone but I am afraid he would be a different story. She doesnt mind his brothers much as long as they dont hug all over me but the middle one she seems to hate. I know she is very spoiled and its my fault. I always wanted a Yorkie and actually when I got her I was going to get a male. However this 2lb little baby comes running out and I fell in love. She was the runt of the litter and the vet said I would be lucky if she ever weighed 5 lbs. Boy was he wrong she did make it to 6. My sister didnt come around a whole lot. Til last year when our middle sister passed away. So Angel didnt have to contend with feeling jealous until then I thought she would get better not worse. I always make time for my baby. She loves to go for rides so thats what we do a lot of. Last edited by pms_barbie; 01-01-2005 at 08:02 PM.
