How much are these classes?
We don't have a Petsmart in our town but there is one about 30 minutes away. Does Petco do these classes does anyone know? With Koda he is so very smart. I have worked with him daily since we got him on so many things. But being that we live out in the country, he doesn't get a lot of socialization with other dogs. We only had a sweet Allie for 5 weeks. He did amazing with her. Also with our Black Lab and Beagles he is fine and very playful. BUT those are dogs he is used too. But I notice when we go to Petco and Pet Supplies Plus he tends to get really anxious at the sight of other animals sometimes. Would these classes help with that? (I am assuming so) I really want to start meeting up with people this summer and want him to be socialized. I know when someone comes to our home he gets very happy and excited. BUT he won't go up to them if they call him. He'll act like it but then turn around and start zoomies around the house, lol!
Sorry OP, this just sort of all came out at once! Certainly not trying to hijack your post!

Rocky and Bella are taking the puppy class right now, and their doing good. I think it depends on the trainer though. Plus, you gotta work with your dog at home too. I really like it though.

The training at PetSmart here cost $119 for 1 hour long sessions for 8 weeks.

We're in puppy class right now and have an amazing trainer. In fact, last week her dog was there because she'd been groomed that day. She put her in a stay on the bench by where we do classs...the dog never moved for an 1hour and 15 minutes! It was amazing!

Anyway, at this point Elphaba is so social that she doesn't usually do what we're trying to do in class...though sometimes she surprises me. But she always does everything the minute we get home. Our trainer says its good, she just wants to socialize at Petsmart and she's the most ridiculously friendly dog you've ever seen...so the socialization is really good for her.

I plan to continue with additionally classes and keep with my same trainer.

I think it depends more on the trainer teaching the class than anything else. The trainer at the PetSmart near me has a WONDERFUL trainer that I talk to and work with outside of pet smart. She does alot of work w/ dogs outside of her PetSmart role--she's been working w/ dogs for years and has worked w/ training service animals and does alot of training for agility events. I recommend her to everyone I come across! Ask the trainer questions and observe a class before committing your time (and money) to it. Hang out and ask some of the people who have used the class for their opinions.

I just think you have to go in realizing that you are just being taught the basics and the methods to use--if the only time they are being enforced is during a few hour long classes, then they are not going to be very effective. You have to be consistant and continue with enforcing the training at home too.

We went to Petsmart and my dog ended up knowing exactly the same as before the class. But I don't think it was a waste of money because we got to socialize a lot!

Your dog will only become trained if you work with it each day during the week in between classes..and then continue to practice after the class is over

This is so true!

Default Ive been thinking about using them

I have thought about them. Precious' vet is from Banfield (inside Petsmart) so I can kill two birds with one stone. I really dont care if she learns alot, just learn to stop having accidents before I get her leash on her to go outside. She will tinkle on me (UUGH!) while Im getting her leash on. LOL

Good Luck with whatever you choose.

Well Roxy enrolled in classes today. She is sup start tomorrow but we can't go. They told us that the class we are missing we can make up this week with a one on one. She is starting in the beginners class. I will give everyone a weekly update on her training for others that are asking about it. The cost was 119.00 and you can retake the class if you are not happy.

I brought Bella to their puppy training. I really feel WE benefited from it and it was worth the cost. I did it for the socilization mainly and it also taught me how to teach her to do stuff. My husband has always been our dog trainer and she is mine so I want to make sure she is smartest of them all She had a great time there playing with the other pups and she learned some basics with practice at home.

I'm glad you started this thread. I have been wondering about petsmart classes here too. Although it's only 99 here. I was really interested in them for the socialization and if they can teach me how to train him, well, all the better. I didn't know you could retake the classes for free if you were not satisfied. Good to know. Oh, and the OP gave good advice about watching and meeting the trainers. I never thouguth obout that. Yes, please let us know how the class goes. I'd love to hear your opinionabout it!

I took Shelby when she was younger (before we got Seymour). I thought the classes were great! We had a lot of fun. Shelby was the littlest dog in the class..... the only other small dog was a Shih tzu. It was funny during "social" time..... she wanted to sniff "dog butt" so bad, but all the dogs were much taller...... I considered bringing her doggie steps!
The lessons that we learned were fun, and Shelby learned quickly. I shared the info to my hubby when we got home from each class and he enjoyed teaching Shelby, too. Once we got Seymour, we used the same techniques to teach him! I would love to go back and take another class after the holidays, but it just depends on my schedule. Plus I would have to decide on who gets to go!
