| When you have to evacuate... BE Prepared! With all the fires, tornados, floods....... and now possible snow/ice storms, I thought I would pass along this infomation that I found about being prepared for an evacuation (with your pets). It is some pretty good info! -Red Cross and other shelters are not allowed to accept pets, so check in advance for hotels or motels that accept pets, or make arrangements with friends, relatives, vets, boarding facilities or animal shelters. -Assemble a pet disaster kit in an easy-to-carry bag, including medications, medical records and first aid kit, leashes or carriers to keep pets under control, current photos (in case they get lost), food, drinking water, bowls, cat litter and pan (or pee pads), can opener (if needed), a favorite toy or two, and care information, plus your vet's phone number in case you board your pets somewhere. -At first sign of trouble, get your pets inside so you can pack them up quickly, confirm pet care arrangements, check to make sure animal ID is secure and up-to-date, and check your disaster kit. -If you must evacuate, your pets may panic and behave oddly, so keep them secure at all times and handle them carefully.

| This happened to me some years back in MD...a truck carrying toxic chemicals over turned close to our street..the firemen came and told everyone to leave in case of toxic fumes..I couldn't..I had a kennel full, probably 15 and some with puppies. My friend lived up the street and she had at least 25 Yorkies herself...we would need a pick up truck for all the carriers. There was no way I could walk out and leave them as the fireman wanted and fortunately, they can not force you.....what if I couldn't go back for days, what if there was fumes and I came back to a houseful of dead dogs, what if they were scared and slowly dying, I had to be there..so I stayed, decided we would all go together..my husband was at work and had a fit when he heard, but whatelse could my friend and I do...? BUT, we did go and buy enough carriers to crate every dog if we were ever forced to leave (by husbands)...I only had 6 Vari-kennels at the time.. Last edited by YorkieRose; 12-02-2007 at 07:11 PM. |
