| Benadryl for itchy skin My 6 month old, 8 pound female seems to have very itchy skin and is constantly biting her legs and scratching herself. I know you can give Benadryl to dogs and I bought some children's liquid Benadryl for her. I just don't know how much to give her. Anyone have any guidelines I can follow or should I wait and call my vet on Monday? Thanks!

| We do 1 mg per pound. Ginger is 13 lbs and gets 1/2 of an adult benedryl...but her allergies are pretty severe. I'd go with less until you've contacted your vet, perhaps the 1/2 mg that Nikki recommended. Also, oatmeal baths work wonders.

| Wow Layla's a light weight! We actually don't do Benadryl at all. I gave it to Spike once for a long car trip because he hates riding in the car. It had the OPPOSITE effect! He almost had a total meltdown. I talked to my vet afterwards and he said it is not uncommon for Benadryl to do that. It makes some dogs crazy hyper and anxious. My mom has always used it with no problem but after a 9 hour car ride from hell, we know it's not for us.

| Thank you very much but my medicine applicator says CC for measurements so I'm not sure how much to give. I have another one that says M for the measurements on the side. I'm not sure how either of these would convert...

| I just asked my husband and he said cc and ml are both measures of volume and mg is a measure of weight. He said depending on the liquid, mg and ml should be fairly close to the same so I would say you are safe at 4 cc's. The chart I linked says the maximum dose for dogs is 2 mg per pound so you should be safe with 4 cc's.

| that's what the vets paper said, and I just double checked, 1 mg per pound..so, if she's 3 lbs. 3 mg. I've used it before, the shih tzu is 10 lbs. she got 10 mg. and it never knocked her out.. |

| My vet says 1/2 to 1 mg per pound and the chart I linked says 1/2- 2 mgs per pound. I'd start with the lowest dose and work your way up if you need to. Especially considering what Marcella said about Layla.
