Say what you want about AKC, but they do so much for public education and canine health research. I dont believe any of the other so-called registries do that. AKC polices the breeders and if all is not up to par, the breeder is suspended from AKC privileges. AKC puts on conformations shows for the breeder/exhibitors as well as agility, ralley, earth dog, obedience, junior handling, etc so that the whole family has a canine sport to enjoy. And who goes to bat for us in the legislation when the states keep trying to pass stupid canine laws? Its not the ckc, its the AKC. Who suspends more unethical and dishonest breeders and shuts down more puppy mills? AKC! Where do the unethical breeders go after they have been suspended? To all the other so-called registries that will register any dog off the street and take anyone who will pay. Every breed started as a mix. But they were bred to serve a specific purpose. The breeders kept generations of records before the specific breed was considered by AKC to be registered as a breed. Alot of the other registries will register anything canine as a purebred with no knowledge of the dogs lineage. I just dont understand how they can then come up with an accurate/honest pedigree??? There are dishonest unethical breeders in all the registries. Too bad there are not 100's of AKC investigators in each state!!!!!! But,sadly, that is not the case. Eventually, these unethical breeders will be caught and then where will they go? To the other registries!!Say what you will about AKC and the $$ they make. I think its money well spent!! Its a buyer beware world. If you dont take the time to do your own research, see some breeders/kennels/health guarantees, then you get what you get. And sometimes the pup will not even look like the breed you wanted and it may have health problems.JMO

Actually, that's not true anymore. Maltese are often bred to Bichon by unethical breeders since large Bichon females can produce more puppies, have less complicated deliveries so they bring more profit.

It's not unusual for a Maltese from a pet store or backyard breeder end up weighing in the teens and having curly hair much to the shock of their owner who expected a six pound silky haired dog.

We have many big Maltese (one is 17 pounds!) on another forum that I belong to that are supposedly purebred and have "papers". Of course, no one, especially their owner, believes they are really purebred.

Apparently DNA testing is starting to become available at vet offices for a nominal fee, about $100. It will be interesting to see how this will affect breeders if this becomes mainstream.

you can send a sample from any dog and they will tell you what all breeds are in it if it is not a full bred dog.
It is really interesting.

Too bad its only for mixed breeds right now. Probably alot more research needs to be done to be 100% correct on purebreds.

I wouldn't worry about getting Baby's papers, I am sure her babies will find great homes without them.
Good luck with the upcoming delivery, I can't wait to see those babies!!

Now on the subject about registries... I do like AKC best but I would like to remind everyone that the whole picture is what is the most important.
I have seen several AKC dogs that have been poorly bred and sickly while I have seen some remarkable CKC dogs that met the standard and healthy. But I have seen it vice versa too. You will always have the bad with the good with any registry you choose.
The important thing is the whole package. Knowing the lineage and health of the lines, conforming to the standard, genetic testing, etc.
We shouldn't put down other registries but rather take a good look at the breeder. It is the breeder that makes the dog not the registry it is registered with.

I am not against any registry but I do prefer AKC. I am not even sure why I prefer AKC.

And I have seen CKC improving on this. For example, they do Dna test if a question arises of the parentage of the dog. And if the have suspicions that the dog is not purebred they also do the PEA testing and if you are found to be lying the will remove the registration and revoke all privileges.
They are also offering conformation and other performance events. CKC is on their way to becoming a better registry. I can't say the same for all the other registries though.

Sorry for rambling on. I just wanted to point out that the most important thing is the dog and the breeder.

I'm not saying NOW, as there are very unethical breeders..I'm saying that when the breeds started, that there is ONLY one purebred dog that was never bred with another dog to produce this purebred, that is a maltese, and that is a fact...I know now, I know that yorkie breeders are breeding with silkys, which is fine, but, they shouldn't pass them off for a purebred yorkie...And as far as my problem with AKC, like I said, they didn't even care when I told them about the problem I had with a pom, what did they do about it?? NOTHING...And that really doesn't matter to me anyway, I don't show, I don't breed, so I don't pay them any money for my dogs, so called papers..

well I was cleaning out my desk and found Baby's previous owners cell #, so I will give it a call today and hope it has not been changed.

Even though, if I get Baby's papers, Rocky in not reg with AKC, he is reg with pet registry, so I will not be able to reg this litter akc, only pet reg which I have never heard of.
