| potty training problem! hi! i'm new to the forum and i thought it looked like i could get great advice here! we've had our puppy for almost a year now and we are nowhere close to potty training him. we keep him in a pen during the day while hubby and i are at work and he doesn't even go on his pee pad half of the time, so we can't even get him pad trained, much less house trained! it may have a lot to do with us not being home during the day because of long working hours, but we try our best on weekends to train him. we are stern when he has accidents and positive when he goes outside. it's frustrating because we sometimes will take him out, and he won't go potty, but then 5 minutes later he will go in the house right in front of us. that just tells me we are nowhere close. it's bad because at this rate he'll never be able to have free run of our house or sleep with us. i know his life would be so much better if he had those freedoms, but it doesn't seem like it'll ever happen. we have cats that love to taunt him while he's in his pen too. they lay outside his pen and just stare at him like he's an animal in a zoo. poor thing. any ideas on what we can do? i'm about out of hope at this point. it feels like we haven't made any progress in nearly a year. |

| Hi there, and welcome! I know how frustrating potty training can be with these little guys. I'm a new Yorkie owner myself, and have only had my little guy for about 3 weeks now. So I am no expert by all means, but I'd just like to share my own experience with you. I thought we weren't making any progress with him at all, until this past week. I've been trying to crate train him. His crate came with a divider, so I made it just big enough for him to stand up, lay down, and turn around. I don't know if you've read up about crate training, but this is so they learn to hold their pee/poo until they get let out. Most dogs don't want to soil in there and have to lay in it. My Mocha however, kept soiling his crate, and it would often be quite a mess. The problem was, whenever he is in there alone, he freaks out and won't stop crying/whining/barking. I've been told to never let him out when he's fussing, as it only teaches him that he will get out when he makes a big scene. Since he was constantly crying in his crate, I didn't know whether he needed to get out to potty, or if he just wanted attention. Since he was soiling his crate anyway, I decided to take a different/opposite approach. I took out the divider and gave him entire room in the crate. He has a cushion and blanket on one side, and a pee pad on the other. Now, when he has to potty, he'll always step off of his blankets and use the pad. This was much easier to clean up, and he didn't have to lay in his own mess. I found that this got him used to going on the pee pad. Now when I take him out, he'll walk over to a pee pad and potty on it. Before this, he only went on his pad (at his own will) twice in the span of 2 weeks. Now that I've changed his crate set up, he's gone over to the pad on his own atleast 5 times this week. He still has accidents whenever his pee pad isn't close enough to him, but getting him to even walk over to his pee pad was a huge deal to me, as he would hardly ever do it before...even if it was right beside him. A lot of people would probably not suggest my method, but hey, it seems to be working for us. Also, you could try putting a belly band on him, so atleast he can roam around the house for a little while without you worrying about him making a mess. If you have any other questions, I will try my best to help |

| Great suggestions already given, very similar to what I was going to say. If he is in an expen make it a very small area where he has a bed and his water/food and then a pee pad so he only has the choice to go on the bed or the pee pad. That way he will get used to going on it and you can slowly give him more space.

| It's very hard to be consistent in housebreaking when you're not home...I feel for you, these dogs need a lot of time spent with them to get them housebroken.. |
