New User, Travel and Training Tips Hello everyone, I am new to the site and I have been reading the forums for a couple of days now. I have already come away with some great tips and info. My girlfriend and I have a 6 mo. Yorkie male (named Jigalo) that we have had some trouble training. I think it is a matter of being stricter and establishing a clear pecking order from what I have come away with. We are also planning on enrolling in obedience classes for extra help. I wish we had started earlier but I think we can still make progress. Any tips on training an older pup would be helpful. I Also have 2 questions. 1. We are getting him neutered next week, what should we expect? 2. We are traveling back to Tx for the holidays from NJ. Do any owners have experience flying with yorkies and if so any help would be great. Thanks in advance for any help Marcos

NJ Breeders? I noticed you were from NJ. I was wondering where you got your puppy from and would you recommend them to others? Thank you, Jessica

Welcome to YorkieTalk, Marcos and Jigalo! We hope you'll come by often. As to you questions: My Higgins had no problems when he was neutered and seemed to be his old rambunctious self within a couple of days. HOWEVER, I wouldn't travel right after the surgery. The trip will be added stress that a pup doesn't need when trying to heal. I would put off neutering him until you return from your holiday trip to Texas. Airline travel: DO NOT let the airline put your pup in the baggage/cargo area! Much too cold and noisy and scary for a little one. Call the airline well ahead of time to find out their requirements. Most require a pup to be in an animal carrier that will fit UNDER the seat. They are usually VERY strict about the pup being IN the carrier at all times. That is a loooooong flight and will be quite stressful for him, either way. You might consider leaving him with a trusted friend or a well-researched boarding kennel, but to tell you the truth.....I'd stay home this Christmas and enjoy him......but I'm a really protective old grandmother type.

Also, some Yorkie owners have smuggled their Yorkies (when the flight attendants aren't looking) and held them in a jacket or such. Usually it should be okay to hold them during a flight, make sure they have a treat or some goodies and that you have access to a bit of water for them during the flight as well.

| Hi, We are in the middle of travelling with our yorkie, Bentley, who is 6 months old. I flew from Seattle to Minneapolis with him a week ago, which is a 3 1/2 hour flight. He did really well, but we worked hard to prepare him for the flight. The first thing you need to do is as Higgin's Dad said and call the airline. Not all allow pets, and those that do charge extra for them each way. We have to pay 80.00 each way on Northwest. You also should call ahead as they only allow a certain number of dogs to ride in the main cabin so you will want to reserve your spot ahead of time. As far as preparing him for the flight, there are a couple of things we did. First, we have always been very diligent about making Bentley a social dog. He is constantly going places with us in the car and meeting new people. This helped him to not be afraid of the new surroundings in the airport. We also bought a soft carrier (to put under the seat) 2 months before the flight. I worked with him whenever I could to get him to go in the carrier and sleep for a few hours when I was home. If your dog is crate trained this is much easier. Bentley cried a couple of times right when I put him under the seat, but once the plane started moving he layed down and went right to sleep. The people next to me never knew I had a dog. (I did wait until the very end to board the plane). I also brought some potty pads and tried to get him to go in the restroom, but he wasn't interested and was able to hold it. We're hoping our trip home next week goes just as well! Good Luck! | Ditto all the other good advise! The Toto and I just got back from "nightmare" holiday travel!! Since she had already flown, we sorta knew what to expect ... before her very first flight I had researched and prepared as you are doing. As soon as we got her carrier ... I simply placed it in the middle of the den floor with the top unzipped and one end unzipped and occasionally I would put one of her favorite toys or treat in the far back where she would have to go in there if she wanted it. I ignored it after that and just occasionally looked to see if she did. Sometimes I would see her peeking in and stretching in as far as she could without actually going in there until finally her wanting the toy/treat got the best of her and she would run in and grab it as fast as she could ... running back out like something was chasing her!! Before I knew it, she was going in there and staying a few minutes and finally I would find her napping in there! After that I began taking her out in the carrier instead of her usual bag ... always asking her to "kennel up" through the front opening instead of the top. She will not enter/exit by way of the top even though it is open most of the time. This trip we were pulled out of line at every security point and scanned all over and BOTH of us "patted" down!! Yeah ... like she had a weapon hidden in all that fur! I really didn't mind but they wear those big blue rubber gloves and it frightened Toto! I made it a practice to take her to the bathroom and try to get her to potty on her wee wee pad but with all the activity in an airport she just simply wouldn't go. This trip we bought a little doggy diaper cover with little pads that fit inside and she stayed dry the whole time. The trip down was delayed and it was 12 hours on planes, in airports and then the drive to our home in AL! When we walked into our house and the carrier was opened she literally flew to her pen and lept onto her wee wee pad in her "tee tee" squat and peed like there was no tomorrow!! Unfortunately I couldn't catch her fast enough to remove the diaper which she filled to overflowing plus a spot on her pad the size of a salad plate!! The trip back to Colorado was a nightmare ... they had overbooked the flight and "bumped" us because, even though we were at the airport in plenty of time ... we were detained by an incompetent trainee who couldn't seem to print our boarding pass and told me we would just have to get it at the gate, for over 45 minutes then had to go through security and by the time we got to the gate we wound up on standby! Long story short ... The Toto and I wound up having to spend Christmas night in Denver alone instead of with my husband like we all had planned!! With unexpected delays and mistakes by airlines ... do be prepared ... have everything you will need for Jigalo ... little water bowl, bottled water, ziploc baggies of food, treats and anything that makes your little one feel secure and comfortable! I also put Toto's favorite fleece blankie in her carrier for her to snuggle on and was thankful I did, because the floor of the plane was really cold. Check ahead ... most airlines only allow one in-cabin pet per flight [some will allow 2 but most only allow one]. And ... even though they charge you $80 each way, our babies get no "perks"! I hope you have a safe and uneventful flight and that little Jiglo has a great time!! Do let us know how he adapts.
