| potty training and Caesar.. HELP! Caesars been with me now for a little over one month. He is placed in his crate at night and taken out 1st thing in the morning before he eats to pee and poo, but he doesn't get it all out, i dunno why? This is around 6am then he is given his food and left out of his crate... and apparently this is when he decides to get all his poop out on the floor... at this time he is not supervised therefore i cannot correct him for this mistake unless i see him do it. he uses his pee pee pads but then he pees on the floor on other occasions... so now i am thinking about switching to a doggie litter box but i fear that it will be the same thing.. also when he is out of his caged area and is allowed to walk around the rest of the house he forgets where his pads are and goes in the kitchen most of the time! I know this potty training thing is going to take some time and patience and its only been a month but i need some desperate help! i know that consistency is good but what happens when they don't get it all out outside and finish up in the house? any advice and tips on what worked for you is greatly appreciated. Another thing i've noticed with Caesar too is that he eats his own poop.. is that normal? its not like i starve him, i feed him 2x a day. i think maybe he is lacking something but i don't know what it could be? help! Aliboo + Caesar |

| Mine are not trained to go outside, so I can only comment on puppy pad training, but if he has pads in the house and is forgetting where they are, I would not give him free reign of the entire house at this point. I started with a small area and then gradually let them have more and more of the house by using an expandable ex pen. I also used the Puppy Housebreaking Aid (drops) made by Four Paws that I got at PetSupermarket. They worked really well bc you put them in the center of the pad and the smell makes them want to potty on the pad. As far as eating the poop... I have read where the poop still has the "odor" of food and that is why they eat it! I never had this problem with my male, but when I first brought my female home she would try to eat his poop (UGH!)... so I just made sure to keep a closer eye on the pads and flush it as soon as I saw it! Good luck! Hope some of this helps! Here are some pics of the area that I provided until they were using the pads....

| I take Gwen out after each meal, and when she's been sleeping for a while, so far so good. Only 2 accidents, and I've only had her two days. |

| i'm having the same problem as you..bentley will go outside and go to the bathroom right when he wakes up b/c it's a routine..but he doesnt tell us when he needs to go potty.. we tried teaching him to scratch at the door..but it's not working out so well.. i'm kinda stumped on what to do.. he's 4 months old..so maybe he needs to be older?? i'm not sure... and he eats his poop too.. i read something that said the reason they do it is because they arent digesting their food all the way. So when they smell their poop it seems like its not all digested so they eat it again.. i know it's gross..but it said to try and mix crushed pinapple with their food and they should stop eatting it .. it said it takes 2-3 weeks..and we are only on day 3 so i'll let you guys know if it works out!

| I read a different thread about that, and there is suppos to be something that you mix with their food that will make them not want to eat their poop anymore.. ill see if i can find it for you guys |

| Aliboo, I don't know if I can offer much help but I can definitely sympathize with you. Maddie does the same exact thing. She is great in the morning first thing and does her business quickly outside. 3-4 pees and a poop like clock work. About an hour or so later though and she has to poop again. We solved that issue by covering the whole area she's in with plastic under newspaper and a pee pad on top of that. That way when she misses the pad she doesn't wreck the floor. As far as the excessive peeing is concerned, I wish I knew what could stop it quickly but I don't. Here's what we have been advised to do by the trainer. 1. Limit her food and water intake. Not a diet but feed her three times a day and leave the food down for no more than 30 minutes. Give her water at the same time. Remove the water except for meals and after physical exertion like play time. In the heat of the summer you need to be careful about this part though. Limiting food and water to specific times should at least keep her from having to go all the time. 2. Limit her range. Our trainer suggested keeping her tethered to us but that is very incovenient. Instead we try desperately to keep in in sight 100% of the time and in range of a quick scoop up. This way when she does try to go inside we should be able to catch her and discourage her. This is the part that's tough because just saying no doesn't startle her enough to stop. We have to clap sharply and yell no. Then we pick her up and take her outside to go. 3. Reward for going outside. We say "do your business" when she squats and exclaim "Good Girl!" (as excitedly as we can at 5:00 am) when she's done and give her a treat. So far she knows she gets a treat when she goes and I think she knows she's not supposed to go inside. Right now I think she really needs a signal to get us to take her out. I have heard that you can teach the dog to sit and speak and once you have that down you do that in front of the door every time you take them out to go. After a while they will associate sitting and barking at the door with going out to potty. Nice theory but We've yet to get it down Tom |
