| Please Help... A Few Questions Inside!!! Wow... am I glad that I found this forum because everyone here seems to be having the same problems as me. I bought my Yorkie as a gift for my girlfriend about 3 weeks ago and was told the exact same thing by the breeder where I purchased him from: "He's already house trained and he'll get used to his environment in a few days..." not the case at all... We made the mistake of letting him roam around the house at first and he pooped and peed everywhere he could. Sometimes he'll pee on his pee-pee pads but for the most part he simply lies in the tray that we've set up for him to do his businees in ... Can anyone answer a few questions for me: 1. Why does he lie directly on the pee-pee pads after he's peed on them? 2. I've washed the floors of my house with a solution of water and vinegar... am I to do the same inside of the small area that is designated for him, excpet for his pee-pad area? 3. I have a huge cage/crate that I could use for him instead of the area where he currently stays. Should I keep him in there instead? 4. When I leave him in his area for an hour or two he rips his pee-pads to shreds... why? Any help that anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. He's almost 4 months old. |

Yep! 1st mistake letting him roam. The first thing I tell my new adoptive yorkie parents is; when you bring your baby home from the hospital, would you put it in the middle of the floor and tell it this is your home, have at it. Same with a puppy, they need to learn house manners and discipline. Yes, Vinegar is a safe method for cleaning the whole area where your puppy is kept. I suggest washable pee-pads.....safes you the possiblity of having to remove pee pad shreeds from his nostrils with a pair of tweezers. Crating is great for potty training, but I don't recommend it for long periods of time.....mostly for sleeping in. When you take him out of the crate, take him to the area you want him to potty at.....he'll eventually get it.

| 1. Why does he lie directly on the pee-pee pads after he's peed on them? Because he is a puppy. He will grow out of it. 2. I've washed the floors of my house with a solution of water and vinegar... am I to do the same inside of the small area that is designated for him, excpet for his pee-pad area? I am not sure about the effectiveness of the vinegar. You might try a pet stain and odor remover like Nature's Miracle or Get Serious, stain, odor and pheromone extractor (my personal favorite). 3. I have a huge cage/crate that I could use for him instead of the area where he currently stays. Should I keep him in there instead? I would suggest a crate not a lot bigger than he is, and fill that with bedding and toys. Most puppies naturally won't want to soil their den. The rest of his confinement area should contain food, water, pee pad and a few more toys. If your schedule permits, try keeping him in the crate for a few hours, but no more than four, then take him to his pad or outside to do his business. Praise, praise, and more praise when he does it right. Lastly, he is just a little puppy, don't expect much. My Gracie is 6 1/2 months old and still has the occasional accident. Lastly, no house privileges (free roaming) until your puppy has proven that he knows where to go. 4. When I leave him in his area for an hour or two he rips his pee-pads to shreds... why? Because he is a puppy. He will grow out of it! You might try a pee-pad holder. What I found helps is to tuck two sides of the pee pad under the sides of the ex-pen. Make sure there are lots of toys to occupy his mind.

| You pose a lot of good questions and you'll get lots of good advice here. In addition, I strongly recommend that you purchace a good book on housetraining. The link below is to a great book, if you get it pay particular attention to the part on scheduling and crate training. Good luck! http://www.amazon.com/You-Your-Puppy...e=UTF8&s=books

| Another surprisingly good potty training book is called either potty training for dummies, or housebreaking for dummies. You get my drift.

| I had to duct tape Venus's pee pads to the floor for about a month. That kept her from tearing them up and playing with them. |
