Petsmart Obedience Classes

Just a quick update, Bella had her first class yesterday at Petsmart. Too early to tell. They use "clicker" training, and for the first class all we worked on was teaching them how to pay attention to what we are saying using the "watch me" method. It's pretty cute to see Bella just staring at me for 10-15 seconds without moving. I will keep everyone posted on her progress. Oh, almost forgot to mention, 4 HUGE dogs in her class (EEEEEEEEEEEKK!)

The Petsmart training for our 4yr. old Yorkie Poo was useless, but I'm sure it depends on the trainer and how hard you work with the dog. We are starting private clicker training with Crosley and our 4month old puppy Wrigley in November!

Glad you liked it!! One of the biggest parts of your pup being successful is that you have to do your homework/at home training! The first couple weeks I let that slack, but now that I've been working with him every day he does amazing. I love the clicker training!

I was wondering if Cooper had all his shots before he went. I don't think they'll have all of them by 3-4 months, but I'm supposed to be taking Howie, my baby, soon but he hasn't gotten all of his shots yet. He's going to get his 3rd round of shots this Friday, but I'm wondering if he'll be okay. The training area is sectioned off from the rest of the store, and the class is for puppies only. Do you think I'll be okay to take him? Or should I wait to have all his vaccines first?

Ferdinand is almost done with his training and hasn't finished all his vaccinations. As long as they're current on them I think you're fine. It's PetSmart's requirement that they are current... so be prepared to bring proof.

Cooper didn't have them all at first, but I showed proof that we were in the series, and he finished them before the class was over.. I'm thinking 3 weeks into it or less
We had to get a bordatella shot as well

Thank you. I'm getting different answers from everyone (yes, it's okay -- no, I should wait) and I'm really hesitant now. I've already signed him up for and paid for the class, but I want to make sure it will be okay. Nothing is worth him being sick, and I'm sure the cost of vet bills will be more expensive! But, I would think it's okay since it's all puppies. But, the first class, I'm going to see what kinds of dogs are there, and hopefully he'll be okay.

i took riley to classes and i wouldn't recommend them. he was about 7-months old, so he may have been too young. but, i would've rather spent the money on a personal trainer. the class felt like social hour for the dogs. that's what the dog park is for. all he learned how to do was sit, which i think i could've taught him myself.

I found that it depends on which petsmart. The one where I live...she is top in the petsmart chain (she told me) and she is awesome. I was very pleased and am planning on bringing sparks back for intermediate and advanced and then going on to agility with whatever place she recommends to us once he is ready.

In order to sign up for a petsmart class the pup has to be at least 10 weeks old, and current on shots. They ask that you bring the shot record to the first training session. Leia is 10 weeks old and starts her training on Sunday! We're so excited!

Bella has been to three classes now at Petsmart, and she is doing great! I am very impressed with what she has learned, and look forward to each week.
