Carpets Cleaned 3rd time in 4 months! I am going to kill my girls!!! I am having the carpets cleaned for the thirs time in 4 months.... I refuse to live in Dog Pee!!!! How the heck to I house train my girls!! The are BOTH a year old... I think I can do the crate thing... They are both crate trained.... But would someone walk me through it??? Someone that did it and had it work.... I'm afraiD that they will be in a crate ALL day...??? But at this point, they almost deserve it! I don't really mean that... I'm just pissed.... I can't afford to keep doing this... but its so gross to have them going IN THE HOUSE! ugh! And my daughetr has a sleep over for her birthday comming up next weekend... the last thing I want is all of her friends saying that they had to sleep in dog pee! Not cool at all! yikes! So help me fix it guys... what do I do???? Pixie is a master climber and jumber, gates and pens do NOT work with her! I think crating is my only option with her... |
Wish I could help....Sadie uses the pads. Rarely have an accident on the carpet anymore. I keep her in the bathroom (no carpet) when I am at work so she can't get into any trouble. Most days she holds it all day until I get home from work. |
We did the crate and it worked great - Loki still loves his crate. I say "crate" and I think a lightbulb goes off in his head and he thinks "Oh good a nap!" I assume you want them to go outside? And if they are already crate trained then they are not peeing in their crates, right? Basically you crate them and then let them out to pee. It helps to take them out on leashes so you just stand in one spot and then give them a REALLY good treat when they go - a treat you don't give them any other time. When you are SURE they are empty then let them run around for 30 mins or so and then back in the crate until the next time they need to go out. You'll do this boot camp style for about a week or two and then increase the free time outside the crate. IF one of them pees on the floor and you see them - startle them! (Like say "AACCKK") and pick them up and IMMEDIATELY go outside. Praise them for finishing but then put them BACK in the crate. They will learn that peeing outside = free time and peeing inside=time out. Does that make sense?? |
Babies??? I was just curious what ever happened with your one girl? Is she pregnant????? |
When I crate trained the boyz I kept them in their crates for about an hour at first, then take them out to potty, bring them in and play for a few minutes and then back in the crates. As they got better and a bit older I kept them in for longer periods, then out to potty, bring them in and play a bit and so on. They slept in their crates at night also. I kept them in the living room with us so they could see and hear us and they wouldn't feel abandoned in another room. I do keep a pad in a litter pan inside for emergencies when we're gone and they use that but other than that they're good. Good luck with your girls. |
Any time I leave the house, they are in the crates, they walk right in... they know what up.... No mater how short the trip, they are NEVER left unattended out to roam..... At night... pixie sleeps in a bed next to my bed, and paris is in our bed now that giz is gone, she was in the bathroom with a gated door and a doggie door, they never had accidents, they KNOW HOW THE DOGGIE DOOR WORKS!!! they go out to play and run INSIDE TO PEE!!!! boy it pisses me off! anyway... the Main prob is Pixie... she has always been the master escape artist... you cany gate her in... so she went where ever she darned well pleased! Cause she could... So I have decided that they will be crated at night now too... most of the pee is in the bedroomand living room... the two rooms with flippen DOGGIE DOORS!!!! What gives!!!!! As far as Paris... Its fals Preg or its Way early??? Still not sure?? |
You might try letting them go out through the doggie door and then closing it so they can't come in until they go potty. I did that with the boys when we first got the door and it helped. |
OK I think I know what will solve your problem. Because you have dog doors - you are not actually following them outside to reward them for peeing outside. You need to take them outside either on leashes or not, but you need to start taking them out, say every hour at first. Wait for them to pee and give them a treat immediately. Teach them what "go potty" and "outside" means. I will ask Loki "Do you need to go outside?" and he will run over and ring his bells if he needs to. So you can start to ask the girls if they need to go out and then encourage them to use the dog door (try putting a treat on the other side). Then you transition to giving them a treat when they come back in. I used to walk all the way outside with Loki and give him his treat as soon as he finished. Now I stand inside while he goes out on his flexi then he bugs me for his treat once he's back in the house. |
ok... bells... I need to work the bells into this.... so that once they are on their own... they can ring the bells to let me know they need to go if for any reason the door is closed... they get closed at night... So hang bells by the doors??? And I go out with them now as it is... they screw off and run back inside to pee... nice huh? Having them on a leash is a GREAT idea!!!! Who sells show leads??? Or just simple slip leads?? they would be easy to use for quick trips outside.... Putting a fullblown harness onn seems like a lot of work at 5am.... which is the first bathroom run in the am... yikes! Soooooo I'm thinking Crate training... back to basics.... how often do we go out?? and how much free time do they get after they go??? I free feed.... so when do they eat???? How does that all work???? |
OMG not again!! I know Pixie is an amazing jumper and escape artist but your poor carpet can't take anymore!! Why don't you try the pennies in a can??? |
I don't free feed - Loki eats twice a day, therefore he poops twice a day - once in the morning and once after he eats dinner. That's helpful because he goes before I go to work and then when I get home. With 1 yr olds I'd go out every hour for a week then every 2 hours. I'd give 30 mins free time/30 mins crate then increase to an hour each. If they start having accidents go back to 30/30. BTW if they don't pee outside it's BACK in the crate... If they aren't going every hour then switch to every 2 hours. My guy could pee every 15 mins so... it depends. I just put a leash on Loki's collar when I just let him out to pee, but use a harness for walks. I've seen the step in style leash/harness all over, even Petsmart. |
Oh gosh... I read situations like this and it makes me glad mine is trained.. I soooooooooooo remember being there..... it made me hate my house.. but the funny thing is Gizmo LITERALLY trained his ownself how to pee outside...lol.. |
Getting carpets cleaner I have Bissel carpet cleaner. It was about two hundred at Target. I love it!!! If there is a spill or acciedent I go grab it out of the closet and clean away. I know it is kind of expensive but I bet in the long run it work be cheaper than having people come out to do it. It really does a good job and they have a kids and pet formula. I hope this helps. Good luck with the potty training.:grin2: |
We had a brand new house with white carpet when we got Loki (Don't ever pick your carpet out from a 3"x3" square you will not get the right color!) Anyway we bought a $70 Bissell "Quicksteamer" and it's AWESOME. I can do a spot FAST and it's very small but still an upright so I don't have to bend over. You can't do the whole room with it, but it works great for spills (me) and messes (Loki). The worst mess is dog puke. I have gotten every dog stain out of my white carpet except where Loki puked something orange. |
FYI- every puke stain I've ever had whether it be cat or dog, Oxi cleans ALWAYS takes the stain right away. I mix the powder in a bottle with water and keep it handy at all times. hasn't failed me yet! |

I just want to say that i feel everyones frustrations here. My four month old was left out today (in the laundry room which is his) instead of in his crate which is kept in there also. My husband decided to let him stay out when he left even though he didnt go potty outside before leaving and needless to say he had his first accident in there,,,,,#1 and #2. I was soooo mad when i got home and he was out.....first of all I stepped on him (but he was fine) and then I stepped in his pee. I'm afraid that now he has gone in there he will think he can go if ever left out again (which will not happen anytime soon). Crate training is working well...just wondering if he will ever let us know he has to go when outside of the crate (he barks when he has to go when he is in the crate). So glad we have these forums to vent!!! |
my maddie escapes from EVERYWHERE and is so darn quick- you can't catch her. We jsut bought a new home and in a month i kid you not when i say we couldnt even count all the pee spots on the rug- soooo we ripped them all out of our house- rug free---cold--- but not pee-ridden! i feel your pain- i could walk maddie for over an hour adn the MOMENT we stepped foot in the door she peed! AND she doesnt take treats anymore- i try to praise her with them and she jsut spits them out now- soooowe just dance aroudn the houe when she is good, |
Day four of Yorkie LOCKDOWN!!!! The girls are Pissed!!! But getting the idea!!!:D If they want to play!!! They have to PEE AND POO!!!! lol And once they do.... the DOO!!! They get a half and hour of free time to eat and drink and play!!! Then its back in the crates!!! :( I'm going to start extending their play/outside time slowly.... as not to have them notice this!! ;) So far... its working like a charm!!! First major road block??? Pixies MAJOR BARKING ISSUE!!!! She barked for 6 hours non stop!!!! She was killing me!!!!!!! Then my sister in law came over and gave me the 10 cents speech... I thought she was full of it!!!! WRONG!!!!! Best 10 cents I ever spent!!! Pixie has not barked in 3 days!!! Well maybe a tiny test now and then... but a quick correction with the can and its done!!! Works like a charm!!! And to think.. i was ready to throw in the towel!!!! I am a believer now!!!!!! So... for you who have done the strict crate training.... how do you transition from crate to free dog... who is crated when your gone and at night..... but has freedom during the day when your home....????? How long? how'd ya do it????? Help me out! And keep in mind... mine are a year old! |

Thanks! I'm going to start the doggie boot camp tonight. Could be pretty interesting... we're lucky though because 90% of our house is 2' x 2' stone tile except for the bedrooms. So cleanup is easy. |

Its funny, because its nothing new... and I've read it here a thousand times and thought.... yeah right! That will NEVER work on my dogs! Ha! Well.... Her name is Cary.... She walked in and was Horrified when she realized that the barking was coming from my house!!! And once inside she was like... WTF?!?!?!?! She asked me if I drank coke?? I said NO! WHY?? (I was yelling cause Pixie was barking so flippen loud!!!!) She said she needed a can.... A can?? Then I told her that I was almost done with a sugar free Red Bull... I was hoping to sprout wings so I could fly somewhere quiet! :D lol She said pound it and rinse it out! So I did! And then she asked me for 10 pennies! 10 pennies....... then it hit me....... she was making on of those racket can things...... What a total waste of time!!!!!!!!! :thumbdown This was never going to work!!!! But it would be really funny to watch her FAIL! :D So I played along!!!! All this time Pixie is Barking like a dog possessed!!!! You would have thought we were dangling a kitten outside her crate!!! it was BAD!!! So we stuffed all ten pennies in the tall slender can.... and used a few strips of packing tape to seal the deal... and ta da!!!!! :animal-pa it was done!!!! The ten cent can of doom! or Cary's Big embarrassment!!!:p I was sure the latter of the two was going to be the title for sure!!! She "instructed" me on its use! "Now Kathryn, all you have to do is say... in a very calm but firm voice.... NO BARKING! and then give the can ONE VIOLENT shake! I'm serious... give it a really good up and quick jerk down! not a bunch of rattling around... just an up and DOWN! its the down crash that will jolt the daylights out of them!!!" so...... I said it and I jerked that can and Pixie and Paris looked at me like I grew a second head! Andthey were quiet for 5 minutes! then paris started and pixie was a second behind her... so from the other room, I picked up the can and called out "no barking!" and gave my can ONE SHAKE! and 20 minutes of silence followed! the next streach was 3 hours! Its day 4 and I have not shaken the can once today!!! In fact the UPS guy knocked like the POLICE! on my door today and pix made a gruff like she was almost going to bark and I looked at her and said no barking... and she stopped.... I opened the door and signed for the envelope... my ups guy said... I was expecting the dogs to be barking.... I told him that they are listening now... he looked shocked! it was so cool!!!!! I am amazed!!!! Seriously! I was going to have Pixie DEBARKED 6 months ago! It was that bad!!!! Who would have thought 10 pennies could change my life like this??? they are totally different dogs!!! Just a warning.... they will totally recoil when they hear the noise... they DON"T LIKE IT!!!! but you won't have to do it for very long... 4 days later all I have to say is no barking... But the can is handy, just in case... And don't over use it... you don't want to lose the effectiveness.... Thus, only one powerful shake! Kathryn |
Now that I think back... the reason I never thought this worked was this old lady across the streed who had min pins... two of them... they nipped and bit!! one drew blood on me once... little devle dogs they were... well she had those classic coke cans with pennies in them all over her house... and she would shake the sh*t out of them constantly!!! while the dogs barked and jumped and she yelled! it was a flippen circus!!!! Sometimes I think she drove those dogs nuts and other times I think they drove her nuts... then I realized it was the Vodka on the rocks that got her and every now and then you'd catch those dogs drinking straight out of her glass! That can't be good for them! No wonder they were all so whacked out! I can see why the husband went early!!! I'd want out!!!!!! Yikes! Don't over use that can... or the Vodka! |

You can get slip leads from www.petedge.com I would not allow them the run of the house. mine are confined to the kitchen for most of the day. They are only in the living room for a couple of hours at night. I know it's frustrating, but they really are not trying to piss you off. they just are not getting the message. Going out with them and praising is excellent advice, but it's only half the battle. They will learn that it is good to go outside, but not that it is not good to go inside. For that part you have to keep their space limited, so you can keep any eye on then and scold when you catch them in the act. The good news is, that at their age, one or two days of constant watching and they will begin to catch on quickly. You can also try doggie boot camp, and keep them leased to you constantly for a few days, so there is no chance of them making a mistake without you catching it. Good Luck BTW It's good to see you back on here posting away. |
:lol tears these last 2 threads have me falling out of my chair!! seriously though, i am glad its all working out for you. i am putting the can info on the back shelf for later just in case i need it!! |
