You have to let me know!!!! Say the "No barking".... Then Violent Shake!!!!! Not at the same time.... The need to ne two seperate actions... that way the "no barking" alone can be enough.... cause if that stops them, you won't need the can... he'll learn that if he stops at the "NB" he can avoid the earth shattering can shake! And he'll stop!!!!!! He's not stupid!!!;) My girls picked up on it pretty quick! I am amazed!!!!! I can't wait to hear!!! And only 10 pennies!!! |
SILENCE AT LAST!!!!!! I didn't think it was going to work the first couple times. I took him out of time out, and right away he started barking. So I followed your instructions, he stopped for a couple seconds, then started again. BUT, after a couple repetitions, no more barking! YAYYYY!!! Now on to doggie boot camp for the potty training. Thanks for the tip, I really appreciate it! Hopefully the hardcore crate training will do wonders for both of us. |
YEAH!!!!!!!!! I am so HAPPY!!!!!! Keep it up!!!! Its like Magic huh?????? I thought she was  NUTZ!!!!! lol Wow!!!! This is so exciting!!!!! You have to check in tomorrow and let me know how its going!!!!! Yeeeeee Hawwwwww!!!!!!!!!! |
Im Going To Try The Can Trick I Think.....cooper Was Boarded For One Night Over The Weekend And Came Back Barking When He Is In His Crate. I Have Been Waiting Him Out And Ignoring But I Swear It Could Make Me Crazy If It Goes On Much More. He Just Quieted Down But If It Goes On Tomorrow....the Can It Is! |
Hey there Katheryn. Hang in there. Yorkies are tough to train, especially the females. I think they are more spiteful then anything. LOL. I have three Yorks (one male and two females). All three took over a year to potty train and quite honestly the females are not 100 percent trained and they are three and two. My male on the other hand does not do a thing in the house ever. The girls are about 99 percent trained, but they still do pee once in a while. Oh and did I mention when you shut them out of a room, they'll bang on the door and if you don't open it - they'll leave a small package in front of it. LOL. The little green carpet machine works well. I can't live without mine. Like you I refuse to live in pee. I'm forever shampooing. Just keep working with them. I does get better, but it's really rare for a Yorkie to potty train under a year and if they are really tiny, it takes longer as their bladders are very small. Good Luck. Elaine (Mom to three and looking to adopt a fourth) |
 Two and 3 years???? I thought I was home free when they turnned one!:( Good Lord help us all!!!!!!! I need tile!!! lol I hope this crate training works! I'm hanging!!! I think the girls are getting it... slowly, but they are getting it... and since I'm home all day, I can really keep an eye on it! ;) Thank God for small favors! |
Just another thought on the rugs, I didn't see it mentioned in this thread... using a carpet treating liquid, like Nature's miracle to help neutralize the pee odor is a good idea. I have a cat that gets a urinary tract infection every 12-18 mos and she points this out by peeing not in the litter box. The nature's miracle comes to the rescue every time. Because with 8 cats, that one little accident can become a slippery slope to pee pee rug land. I have also used it with water directly in my steam cleaner. Teresa |
Maddie just turned one and i am as desperate as anything. She is a little better with me being very strict on her food/water intake and not leaving it out. But she is still having accidents:eek: like i said before, we had to just rip out ALL the carpet because we couldn't take it anymore!! and now our house is FREEZING but we are scared to get throw rugs- cause we all know how that ends! but thanks for the 10 cent idea- cause all of a sudden she is a crazy barker! and i cant take it anymore!!!!!!! |
throw rugs As for the throw rugs. DON'T DO IT!!!!! When I first got Molly she thought every soft thing on the floor was for pottying. She even peed on a paper towel that had fell in the floor. So I took all of the rugs up and washed them. She is good to go to the pad every time. She will poop next to it if there it a pee pee spot already there.I thought we were home free so last week I bought a new rug to go in front of the kitchen sink. Molly panced her fanny right over and peed right on it. So I say No to rugs. We Just wear socks all the time. That hard wood is chilly on the toes. |
Must be time to invest in a carpet cleaner! It would be cheaper in the long run. |
When I crate trained the boyz I kept them in their crates for about an hour at first, then take them out to potty, bring them in and play for a few minutes and then back in the crates. As they got better and a bit older I kept them in for longer periods, then out to potty, bring them in and play a bit and so on. They slept in their crates at night also. I kept them in the living room with us so they could see and hear us and they wouldn't feel abandoned in another room. I do keep a pad in a litter pan inside for emergencies when we're gone and they use that but other than that they're good. Good luck with your girls.
i have a question, when you are out did you let the free in some room and that is why you have a pee-pad? i just recently got a yorkie and i am training him on the pee-pad. i have him in the laundry room in a crate and in the morning i go in there let him out and he goes and finds the pee-pad .. he is getting kinda good at it except for today i moved his crate out because i needed to fix it and he pooped where the crate was! once he pees and poops i give him a treat bring him out to play for a couple of mins and then back in the crate .. i too leave him in the crate with me in the living room. i'm just wondering if i am doing it right or not? thanks .. any advice and tips are greatly appreciated. |

Oh my god! I have to try this...my trainer had me bang on the crate, but that did not work. He then told me to get seperation anxiety drugs (nice trainer). I've now just been leaving him out bc my neighbors will kill me. I have to try this... thanks so much for the info. |
We've had two "accidents" in the last week. One was when I left my bathmat down in the bathroom (that one's my fault) and then this morning she went about a foot away from a BRAND NEW CLEAN PAD!!! I was so mad & she knew it too. That's the first time she's done that in a long time. And I'm going to try the can thing for barking. |
Training Inch by Inch Start with crating at night. They must be able to hold their pee all night. That will give you some indiction of their capability to hold their urine. Remember, the crate must NOT allow them room to move around. Only enough room to sleep. If they whine in the night..GET UP AND TAKE THEM OUT AND RETURN THEM TO THE CRATE. 2. Don't free feed and water while training. Set specific times and if they refuse to eat and drink, PICK IT UP! They wait until lunch time. Eventually, they will eat and they will know to eat when it's put in front of them. AND....ABSOLUTELY NO WATER AFTER 8 p.m. 3. NEVER NEVER NEVER....leave them unsupervised. If they are not in your arm, outside, or in a confined area, such as the kitchen during play, PUT THEM IN THE CRATE!. They can be in the same room, but no running around freely!!! 4. Everytime they come out of the crate, PICK THEM UP and take them outside to the same spot (on a leash) Do not let their feet touch the carpet. It will be the feel of the grass that queues them to pee. NOT THE CARPET. Be patient and PRAISE!. You can also use treats. As you think they are progressing, the periods out of the crate get longer BUT keep them in the kitchen! They see your house like a football field. They need smaller areas to learn that this is their den and you don't pee in it. NO PEE PADS, NO Diapers...always outside in the same spot. Start with every 30 minutes until you can get a handle on specific times they pee and poo. Hope this helps. It work for me...We still have an accident once in a great while, but only because I forget the time and get busy. cooper doesn't bark, just sits by the door, so if I am not around, MY FAULT. He is now 9 months old and has free roam of the house from 7 a.m. to noon when i come home from work to let him out and from 1 to 4 p.m. Walks before and after work and play time. Good luck |
Crate training was a big flop for me. I read up on it and thought I would master it. I did put her in a room with linoleum when I went out. She would be in there for hours and not go, so now Penny has full run on the house, she hangs close to me most of the time. Now the problem is when she does go inside, I never catch her. Its mostly if she gets up in the night, but not all the time. She sleeps with me, but I do not always here her. The problem is I dont always find it unless I step in a wet spot. She also poops too, out of site. Its hard to correct her if you can't catch her in the act. She is doing pretty well otherwise. I keep putting off getting the rug cleaned hoping she will stop before I do. (She will be 2 in Jan.) Do you think if I get the rug cleaned and get the odor out she will stop? :questione |
I'm definitely going to try the can thing. My husband thinks she barks too much, but she doesn't do it constantly. She will stop when I tell her no bark, briefly. She is not nearly as bad as some of the stories I have read on this thread. Dogs do bark, its normal. I want her to bark when someone first comes, because my house is tight and I don't usually here anyone come. (Good guard dog) right?:woof: |
I PUT MY BABY, ALONG WITH HER CRATE IN THE CLOSET BUT WITH MY KIDS BABY GATE BETWEEN THE DOORS SO SHE CAN SEE WHATS GOING ON..HER BED IS OUTSIDE OF THE CRATE AND IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING SO FAR. SHE SEES THE CRATE AS HER PLACE TO DO HER BUISNESS. SHE WENT IN THERE 3 TIMES TODAY AND MAY I ADD I JUST STARTED THIS TODAY. CROSSING MY FINGERS. |
Breny~ that's good info about the oxyclean...I've got 2 cats and one is always "urping". I'm going to try that in the bottle...great idea:) . Kathryn, I know this won't make you feel much better, but Max will do the same thing sometimes...I leave the back sliders open a lot of the time if I'm home, just so he can run out to the back if he wants. And he's very good first thing in the morning or just after he's fed in the morning (I free feed dry and give him 1/6 cup of canned morning and evening), but if I leave the guest room door open....I ALWAYS find a pee spot or he's pooped. Luckily, with the diet he's on, his poops are really dry most of the time, so easy to pick up. But it's so annoying when he KNOWS to go outside, and has easy access to go outside, but chooses for some reason to go in the guest room. He did the same thing at the last house we were in.....I don't know if it's b/c other dogs have been in there or what, but I also just noticed that he 'marked' one of the blankets I have covering the sofa in the cat's room:mad: . Very annoying. I know that when we first took him up to the Napa Valley (Christmas time) it was so cold and rainy, which he wasn't used to and he was NOT happy to have to go potty outside where it was cold and wet! We were staying with my mom and stepdad (who has ADD, I think) and I told him to be sure he closed all the bedroom doors so that Max couldnt' get in there first thing in the morning...so what does he do? He left the office door open and of course, Max ran in there (he was so little then, and so fast, LOL), pooped, and ran back out like nothing had gone on....but of course...WHO steps in it? My stepdad:D . We almost died laughing over that. Well he DID have socks on, but he was horrified. I'm sorry...I'm a nurse, that stuff is unpleasant, but not the end of the world, LOL. Well, one end, I guess:rolleyes: Hope you can get the girls trained; I'm still working on it. They say not to scold them, and I can understand if you're gone FOREVER and they HAVE to go, but it's really aggravating when you take them out, stay out for a long time and then they just wait til they're somewhere soft and warm to do their business! On one hand, can you blame them? On the other hand......??????? Good luck. Keep us posted! |
Penny~ I'm not sure that you can really get that smell out at least as far as the dog goes. WE may not smell it, but I think dogs can still smell it somehow. My Max sleeps with us, but I know he sleeps all night, he can't get down from our bed anyhow; it's too high and we don't have a ramp for him. He's a really good sleeper. My vet told me that lots of people say that their dog sleeps all night and they really don't, but Max really does. He's right next to my butt, preventing me from turning without moving him first, LOL. I wouldn't have it any other way though. I don't know what the answer is; Max goes outside most of the time, but if certain places are open to him, he goes in there. If the door is closed to that room, no problem. It's interesting to say the least:confused: And, as far as the barking goes, Max barks when he hears someone in the yard or at the front door. And he really does hear things I don't....someone just came to the front door to stick a business card in and he heard it immediately; I heard nothing! But I went to the door just to humor him, and opened it and there was a card stuck in the handle! Max doesn't bark unless it's someone that he thinks is breaching the security of our home or occasionally will growl at some people (usually little boys, hehe). I think a dog that barks when someone comes up to your house is a GOOD thing, but it's also good if they stop once you've let the person inside, hehe. :animal36 |
I gave up and tore up my carpets because I could not stand it anymore.....and I love my babies more than my carpets, and really didnt need the stress. Good luck hun. |
Can Trick Hey guys, I'm brand new at this, just joiined today. I've never heard of the can trick before but it sounds like a winner. I have a 3 month old who will get so upset in her crate that she gives herself diarrea! What a mess and she's so loud! Believe me, when Cricket isn't happy, everyone knows Cricket isn't happy. Sometimes she even sounds like a peacock. I'll have to try the can thing and see if it will shut her up an keep her calm so she doesn't make herself sick.:) Tami |

CROSSING MY FINGERS. __________________ MeLANie~SoNia'S~MoM Well, SoNiA so far is doing good. She did have an accident under the bed again and by the door, oh and in the other room. "SIGH" But she has been going in her cage when i keep her in the closet. Maybe with two accidents under her butt! Im Trying...I have faith in you Sonia!! I think she understands that she cant come out to play unless she goes in her cage..My son and i just did a sweep of the house and i found some POOPY!! I'm mad at her.. Buy she is so cute!!:) |
Peeing & Pooing I just sold my first litter and when prospective buyers asked I told the truth. I don't find these little dogs easy to house train! There are some exceptions I know like Remi who at 4 monthes old usually goes in her litter box but over the years I have had sneaks who go under the bed and behind doors, under pillows on the couch (figure that one out!) and I have one now that poos almost everytime I put her in her crate. She could have just gone an hour ago but she must go in the crate! Connor is perfect all day at work and comes home to poo on his favorite rug, so I rolled the rug up! It's a constant battle but eventually it will be won (for the most part). They sure are cute though! And did I mention sweet (nothing like yorkie kisses)! :) :) |

I bought a carpet shampooer when I got Lucy, but I am having my carpet taken out and wood floors put down this Tuesday.(in the living/dining room and hallway) She does well with pee pads, but seems to always miss the pad when she does #2! Since I got Rebel, I decided the wood floors made better sense. Also, when ya'll shampoo your carpet, you might try putting about 1/4 c of white vinegar in with the cleaning solution to neutralize odor. |
Hey the can thing is working amazingly. She shuts right up. We had tree cutters out on our street the other day, right out front of our house. After the can a couple of times, she just sat and watched them.:D |
