When are people going to accept that the whole domination theory has been thrown out the window? Even the original authors who compared domesticated dogs to wild wolf packs have retracted their research as flawed.

4chippy - please don't take my criticism as an attack on you. I LIKE how you handled it (with the disappointed voice), but I absolutely do NOT agree with growling/shaking a pup who is whining because he/she is scared and lonely.

3 or 4 months.. I can't remember exactly. He only went potty in my bed ONE time and boy did he know that mommy was ticked off at him! I was one of those people that before bringing Howie home said that dogs don't belong in bed with humans. Then I realized that he was lonely and bored at night. The only thing that got him to sleep for a reasonable amount of time was letting him cuddle up with me. He's getting pretty good at sleeping for long periods now - last night he slept from 12:30am - 9:00am!!!! That's the longest it's been, I think! Haha maybe your post brought me some good luck!

When you have Bella in the house with you, have you consider attaching her leash to your belt loop and letting her follow you around? It helps to establish a leadership mentality and you can keep an eye on her and she'll be with you so she won't be yapping away in her crate. I tried something similar with Howie and it worked!

We don't let our puppy (CoCo) sleep in our bed mainly because I'm afraid of crushing her.

Since the first few nights, she sleeps in her pen quietly every night (knock on wood). I usually pass out on the couch in front of the TV, so she usually ends up only going 4 to 5 hours in the pen at night by herself. In the morning she is groggy, so I assume she's been sleeping well.

The key is not to spoil them. If you let them into bed on the first day, you're screwed for life. A dog that belongs to people with jobs needs to learn to be somewhat independant; and given enough exercise and play time, they can go several hours in their pen and just sleep most of the time.

I had to train my girl friend not to come running to, or even look at, the dog when she cried. After a couple of days of completely ignoring crying, and rewarding quiet and calm, she quickly learned that being quiet and calm is much more rewarding.

Hey P-did, THanks for the post, it is reassuring to know that I am not some uber biatch who is insisting on having my baby learn to sleep in her pen (I feel like that sometimes). I do feel bad sometimes, but I work full time and I want her to be independent and o.k. being alone. She has been doing great so far and the ignoring principle seems to work. I would like to have her out of her pen eventually, but realistically I don't see this happening untill after 6months to a year.
I think there are many different styles of training out there that work differently based on lifestyle and the puppy's personality. I think we have found what works best for us

Yes, mine too have slept in bed with me since they were about 12 weeks old. They stopped whining completely and sleep through the night. The only thing to watch for is if they wake up at night and jump down and pee on the floor. My boys still do that occassionally, but not often! usually I wake up when they do and take them outside. Most of the time though, they sleep the same hours as me!

For your barking baby. I have read never to yell at a barking dog. They say the dog thinks you are barking too. You should calmly say "no bark". If they are barking a something you pick them up and remove them from the person, place or thing while saying "no bark". It has worked for me but, Molly isn't a big barker. But, when she does I say "no bark" and she stops. As for the crate when you put her in you should say go to bed. When she starts going in on her own when you say go to bed give her a special treat. I hope she starts to like her crate. Molly naps in there with the door open or goes in just to have some peace from my girls. Also we have a stuffed yorkie in her crate that she snuggles with. You my also think about her comfort. Is she cold? Maybe she is too close to a vent. Give her lots of love when your home. I wouldn't just put her in their when your home. Your her MAma she wants to be with you. It's like a toddler who wants their mommy. If your home they want you. If your not she with figure it out and learn to sooth. Good luck.
