Default Potty Training-Outside and Pads-Help

I asked this question on one of the threads and now I forgot where...

I noticed many of you talking about wee wee pads...when you train your puppy, do you do both-wee wee pads for inside while at work and outside while home? I plan on training to go outside (that's what I did with Baxter), but thought I should use the pads while I am at work. I've heard this isn't a good idea, and that it is a good idea

Ideally, you should pick one spot and train there *consistently.* However, that just isn't possible for a lot of folks.

We train outside during the day, and inside on pee pads at night or during bad weather. While it may slow down the training process somewhat, it is working well for us and as my pup matures, we may eliminate the inside pee pad.

We are training her to go on wee wee pads in the laundry room ONLY. There is no carpet in there and it is away from the "living" part of the house..

for the first few months after i got nala i tried to teach her to use the pee pads and go outside. we had to keep her seperate from the other two dogs until everyone could get along. at first she did really good with the pads but then it got to where she just would pee anywhere. and now we don't keep her seperated so she has access to the patio door and potty training is going much better!! she only has a couple of accidents and it's usually in the morning b/c everyone in my house is lazy, lol

Thanks for the input.

What do you do during the day-do you work? If so, do you put them in crates and they learn to hold it that way? That's what I did with Baxter, but I didn't know if that was the best idea. It seems like if you let them roam an area instead of just the crate they would go ahead and go on the floor...?

I confine Stewie in the kitchen during the day w/ a pee pad. It helps. No accidents in two weeks pee-wise

We started Reagan on wee wee pads and really had a lot of trouble. As soon as I was consistently taking him outside, he got it! He never goes in the house - though he will occasionally wee on the porch. My husband is home during the day and takes him out once a day to wee. Otherwise, he waits for me to come home from work. He was about 6 months old when he was able to "schedule" himself for 2 times a day - and then, a quick trip outside before bedtime. Just give it time. I do think that using both methods is confusing to them. We had no luck until we took up the pads. Then, Bingo!

Default Potty Training

Thank you so much for the tip. Maggie is 9 weeks old. My husband and I are retired, so there is always somebody home. I have her crate in the kitchen, which she loves. I do have a puppy pad down, (just in case) while she is playing with her toys. She sleeps all night and is ready to hit the grass as soon as she wakes up. Thank Again

I'm getting ready to properly train my 5th old Benji. I would prefer out in the yard, but live in NYC. Can you really let a 5-6lb yorkie go out in the icey snow ground and the freezing cold weather to potty? I would think they are too delicate for that? My former yorkie used wee pads for the most part. Any thoughts?

Default Let's Potty

Hi Nancy,
Fortunately we live in Texas. Our winters are nothing compared to New York. If it ever snows here, you better take a picture. It's gone before you can drink your first cup of coffee. I did however order the Wizdog. Not only for Maggie, but for me too. Just losing sleep and taking her out in the middle of the night has gotten me a nice cold. I don't plan on using it unless the weather is bad. Your friend sound like she has really gotten the act together. I wish you well.

Default Crate Training

We've had Trixie now for a little over a week. She is 14 weeks old, we tried doing both the potty pad & outside training. But she's still going in the house everywhere. We finally had to stop the pad training when we found our 16 month old daughter carrying around Trixie's poop!!!! I have a crate and I keep hearing about crate training, I'm not exactly sure what crate training is. Can someone explain how do I crate train? How long should I keep her in the crate throughout the day. Some say a few hours and some say all day unless they are eating or eliminating. I'M SOOOOO CONFUSED!!!!!!!!

Default Hi Tot

I'm the last person to guide you on crate training. I thought I had the smartest puppy in the world. Would sleep all night (I thought). I was washing her blankie one day and noticed it was wet. Her crate area is only 10X13. Now I leave her crate door open all the time. During the day she takes her naps in there. I take her out as soon as she wakes, eats and after play. At night I still leave the crate door open, but put down a tee tee pad. She is only 10 weeks old. When I ask her if she needs to tee tee, she beats me to the door. She just is so quiet. She wouldn't even yipe in her crate. So, I guess I will continue to do this for now. It's working fine. I get up around 2AM and take her outside to tee tee. I put her back in the kitchen and she gets up around 6AM. I have a baby gate up also on th kitchen opening. She has her crate, food, water and toys in the kitchen. She seems well adjusted and very happy in her surroundings. After her evening meal, and her last poo for the day--we bring her into the den and have playtime and school. She alreadys sits, stays and comes on command. I wish you luck with your baby. I am beginning to believe what works for some doesn't always work for others. It the same as raising a human baby. Not everyone raises theirs the same.

What about belly bands? Has anyone tried them? Does your pup mind them on? And, do they make them small enough for a yorkie puppy about 3-4 lbs?
Thanks.

Thanks stitches, I guess your right each doggie is different. I don't have a problem during the night she sleeps all the way through, it's during the day. She will potty outside and come back in & do it again. I have also have 3 kids and I think they were easier to potty train !!!!!

What's a belly ban?
