Whatever you do, you do need to get the urine smell out of the crate. So you may have to discard the sheep skin or saturate it with odor neutralizer like Natures Miracle or Simple Solution (this is the one i used) and throw it in the wash. You also need to scrub the crate down with the neutralizer too. There should not be any urine or feces smell left in the crate that might stimulate her into doing it.

The other thing I thought about is putting an old shirt that you have worn and has not gone thru the laundry yet. Put that in the crate instead of the sheep skin. throw food on it. Maybe if she has your smells in there and food smells in there, she may reconsider what the crate is for.

Just a thought and it might work.

Will washing the sheep skin in bleach water get the smell of urine out of it? I haven't been putting the enzyme cleaner on the bedding but I have been washing the crate out with it. I wonder if putting some bleach and some vinegar in the washing machine would work. I'm going to try the shirt idea--thanks. I hope that she don't decide she can pee on me after that!

This is the better idea. Do this in the begining. I don't think this will confuse her at all. Millie had the crate for day and x-pen for night (eventually). Its the same as blocking them in the kitchen during the day and putting them in your bed at night. Dogs get used to routines, they don't really care what the routine is as long as it's consistent.

I think you can work your way to this, but after you feel more confident in your puppy and it's potty training ways. I gradually worked Millie out of her crate and into the x-pen, after I was confident in her and would start in small intervals, like if I left to do errands that would not take longer than 1 -2 hours. When she did well with that, I would work up to a few more hours and one day I tried it while I was at work and she did fine.

They say dogs cannot tell time, so they don't know if you are gone 1 -2 hours or 8-9 hours. So whatever their behaviors is for the 1 -2 hours will more than likely tell you wath the behaviour will be for 8-9 hours.

I would not use the bleach. I have not heard that it works. But you can use a vinegar/water solution. I would put it directly on the sheepskin and also in the wash. If you only put it in the wash, it may be too diluted to do any good.

I know this topic has been beat to death, but I will pass on what worked for me. I have 2 kennels, a small plastic one, and a larger wire one. I tried to just use the wire one in the beginning, but my pup would just pee all over it and sleep in a dry spot, so I tried the smaller kennel and I left the door open so she had access the pee pad that was on the floor in the usual place that she was used to it being. In the morning I found pee spots on the floor, but not on the pad or in the kennel, so I tried putting the smaller crate in the wire kennel with a pee pad. Worked like a charm. Not only did she not pee in her kennel, it reenforced the pee pad training, because the only place to really go outside of the small crate was the pee pad ( I put her water dish in the corner that wasn't used by the pee pad or the crate. Since my pup is now older, I have stopped using the large wire crate and she is able to hold it all night in her smaller crate. With this method I never deprived her of water, and she still had her little den, and it saved me a lot of work and stress.
