| New Yorkie Owner with Housebreaking Woes Hi! This is my first time posting. My baby is Lily Belle. She is almost 4 months old. Her mother is a poodle and her father is a yorkie. She looks 100% yorkie, though. Anyway, I am having a heck of a time with housebreaking. We are training her to go outside and she is relapsing! For awhile she was doing pretty well with the pottying, but now she won't pee outside but will go as soon as she comes in the house. Also, she has never liked to poo outside at all. This is the first "small" dog that I have trained and I have read that they can be more difficult. We also have a 9 year old rat terrier and they go outside together. I thought Lily would pick it up from watching her, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Lily Belle's Mom |

| Hi and welcome to YT! If you use the search button on the blue bar and type in housebreaking or peeing you will pull up hundreds on threads on this topic. It does appear that these little ones try our patience.

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Housebreaking From what I have read they do tend to take longer to housebreak. I took a piece of poo from the wee wee pad and put it outside. It sort of marked the area so he knew that is where I wanted him to poo and now he does it outside. She is still young so you will get lots of accidents. You just have to be patient (I know easier said than done....I have to count to five if I find a mess) and keep at it. Maybe try to stay out a bit longer and walk her around in the area so she will go. Sometimes they get distracted with everything going on and won't go. I usually have to tell Lex it's time to potty and then he can fiddle around. I notice he can be midway to doing his business and if someone passes by or a bird or car go by it throws him off track...lol. Good luck.

| You may need to go back to the basics inside and confine her to a small area with a pee pad. But it does take lots of patience and praise when they do get it right. |

| Scarlettroses (interesting name!) - I hope it works for you like it did for us. Right before Joey decided to be housebroken, I despaired that he would never get it, that I was a total failure, and that it was hopeless. I swear it wasn't more than a week or 2 later that something clicked for him and he's been accident-free ever since. I hope it works that way for you!!!

| We just need to remember that they are not doing it to be naughty or to get even. They simply are not getting the message, and if what you've been trying, isn't working then try something else. You know they are trying just as hard to cross the language barrier so they can communicate with us. You might just need to be a better listener. |

| Thanks for all the tips! I have been reading this board for several days now and I am impressed with all the valuable information found here. And, you are all so nice! Lily is definitely different to train than other dogs I have had, I think because of her small size. I'm sure her little bladder can't hold as much. My daughter will be graduating from high school next month and leaving home, so I got little Lily Belle to be my "substitute" baby. I just adore her. She has so much personality and when she looks at me with those little black eyes my heart just melts! I am not giving up on the housebreaking. I basically wanted to say hi to everyone and tell you that I really enjoy this forum. Lily Belle's Mom Last edited by scarlettroses; 04-06-2006 at 12:39 PM. |
