| Newbie has some clicker training questions I'm hearing all this wonderful stuff about how easy clicker training makes training a yorkie puppy and Ive got a couple questions about it I was hoping someone could answer for me. For one..can you use it for housebreaking a new puppy. And two..is the clicker used just to learn commands or always to reinforce them with a treat? Like..after the puppy learns "sit"..will I always have to click and treat? Thirdly..can I do this myself..or do I have to take my puppy to an obedience class? Thanks so much for your help guys! |

| The clicker is the best thing in the world and you can do it yourself!!!!! It may scare your dog at first but it should get used to it. We use our clicker for potty every once in a while still just to keep it reinforced and then give her a treat. Eventually you won't have to use it once they learn the command. They'll get to where you can just tell them a command and they should do it. You don't need obidence training to learn how to do it. Just start out telling them a command like "sit" and at first they won't do it but just keep saying sit and once they do hurry up and click it and give them a treat. Only train for about 5 mins at a time b/c of their attention span being short. Eventually they'll catch on. But only click when they do what they're suppose to. It's wonderful!!!!!! Good luck!

| Gutu, I've recently started a couple of threads on Clicker Training here on the training board. I'll bump them up for you. As far as classes, you can certainly clicker train your dog without classes. BUT, classes are so much fun and they are good for your dog. I say, do both!
